10 New & Hot Restaurants Singapore March 2015 – The Quite Atas Edition

For our non-Singaporean friends, ‘atas’ means ‘high class’, word derived from the Malay word meaning ‘upstairs’.

We use it as an adjective, for example “This restaurant is very atas, sure spend a lot of money”, “You have many atas friends yah? Don’t want to go to hawker centre to eat”, or “Dear, it’s our monthsary, can we go atas place to dine.”

Essentially, ‘quite atas’ here would mean looking or tasting high-end, but it wouldn’t cost that much.

Tel: +65 6688 7299
Opening Hours: 6pm – 10pm

Thai street food got very atas with Chef David Thompson’s execution who propelled Nahm to be one of the best restaurants in the world. His other offspring Long Chim has very surprisingly opened in the direction of offering affordable unpretentious street food. What you can expect is “arh-arn-jaan-dtiao” single-plate foods, rather than those suitable for communal dining. I looked at the prices of the menu, and was well, both pleased and relieved. (Read: Long Chim MBS)

Who would imagine, that a steamed bun named “dogs do not pay attention”, supposedly created by a poor village boy, would find its way to the atas MBS? Ah, Goubuli buns. Travellers to China find themselves seeking out these delicate buns at Goubuli’s original restaurant in Tianjin. Despite its popularity in China, it has never rolled out an international outlet – till now.

Tel: 6532 0481
Opening Hours: Mon – Thurs, 5pm – 1am. Fri, Sat 5pm – 3am, Sun 11am – 11pm

Why won’t Mischief be atas? It’s opened by the atas “Barbarella”, I mean Michelle Chong, Cynthia Koh and Daniel One. Located at Esplanade Courtyard, Mischief serves up American Street Food found in food trucks all across America like Sloppy Joes, Soft Taco, Philly Cheesesteak and the crowd pleaser’s Chicken Waffle – Chef’s secret recipe chicken thigh atop a crispy waffle.

Meatsmith
167-169 Telok Ayer Singapore 068618

Burnt Ends got a spot in the atas Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2015, and the guys behind Burnt Ends has launched Meatsmith at Telok Ayer Street. Think Blacksmith for the interior with two large authentic smokers flown in from the states, a bulls head and a dedicated cool room for charcuterie. Expect smoked meats and burgers.

Manzoku

Tel: +65 67344436
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 3pm, 6pm – 10pm (Mon-Sun)

Manzoku which means ‘satisfaction’ in Japanese, serves classic favourites available at Chikuwa Tei, along with custom sushi rolls and yakitori. Fish is sourced across Japan, and sauces such as shoyu and teriyaki are made in-house. The Chirashi Don ($25) is quite lauded on social media for serving generous portions of fresh sliced fish on sushi rice. (Read: Manzoku Purvis Street)

Tang’s Steamboat Restaurant
41 Keong Saik Road Singapore 089146
Tel: +65 6221 1760
Opening Hours: 11am – 12am (last order 11pm), Closed Mon

There are two main types of steamboat restaurants in Singapore. One, the type that you pay less than $20 and eat all that you wish. The atas other, you pay a lot, and end up not eating too much. Tan’s Steamboat Restaurant may belong to the later, said to offer authentic Szechuan Steamboat with a wide variety of ingredients and specialties. $89++ for Premium Set for 2 pax of 11 courses, or $69++ for the Economic Set. But food okay only lah.

Royal Noodle
27 Circular Road Singapore 049383
Tel: +65 84530129

There were four main types of noodles available at Royal Noodle (atas name) – dry or soup, spicy or non-spicy, said to be based on a Tang Dynasty recipe. Wah. I believe, well, it was a branding gimmick more than anything as both Tang Tai Zhong or Yang Guifei should had consumed better things? (Read: Royal Noodle Circular Road)

Kay Lee Roast Meat Joint
Suntec City Mall, 3 Temasek Boulevard #02-609 Singapore 038983
Tel: +65 6594 2202
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm

The menu has expanded to a variety of roast meats, noodles, double boiled soups, congee and appetisers. (Read: Kay Lee Roast Meat Joint Suntec City)

10 New Cafes In Singapore April 2015 – Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These

For the first time in many months, we are finding difficulty in compiling a list of newly opened cafes for café hopping in Singapore. Because there aren’t that many to begin with in the first place, while some others were not too ready despite being opened.

Has cafes in Singapore finally reached in saturation point?

What we know is: café hoppers are becoming more discerning (another word = picky), and would take more to stimulate their interest. Eggs benedict and waffles alone would not be enough anymore.

Seems like the newer cafes are gearing towards the sweet stuff – hand-crafted gelato, fanciful cakes, churros and Korean bingsu.

10 New Cafes In Singapore April 2015 – Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These

33 Sixty Eight
8 Jalan Batu #01-07 Singapore 431008
Opening Hours: 5pm – 10pm (Mon), 12pm – 10pm (Tues-Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/33sixtyeight.singapore

The owner is a health-conscious yoga teacher, and therefore the gelato is below 9% fat and sorbet both diary and fat free. We liked the ‘delicious specials’ best, such as warm scones with gelato ($6.50), Double Puff Power ($6.00) where 2 scoops of gelato are sandwiched in choux pastry, and Bun Bun Bomb ($6.00) which paid homage to old-school buns. We preferred the gelato (coconut flavour was the best) better than the sorbets. Note of caution: taste before buying.

Banana Tree Singapore
26 Keong Saik Road Singapore 089133
Opening Hours: 9am – 7pm (Tues-Fri), 10am – 8pm (Sat-Sun), Closed Mon
https://www.facebook.com/bananatreesg

South Korean café chain Banana Tree is popular for its banana theme decorations, yellow and white clean look, and pretty potted plant desserts. The signature desserts available included the Flower Paap ($6.50) – pudding in a flower pot, Oreo Bomb ($12), Pot BingSu ($12.50) and Som Som latte with candy floss toppings ($6.50). Some items were pretty to look at, but may fail to excite due to the long waiting time and over-expectations. (Read: Banana Tree Keong Siak Street)

Working Capitol Café
1 Keong Saik Road Singapore 089109
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 6:30pm
https://www.facebook.com/theworkingcapitol

The Working Capitol is a community workspace for co-sharing spaces, private offices and events space. The café downstairs offers a small selection of sandwiches, pastries and cakes. Coffee is decent, though the slice of cake we had was on the dry side. Perks? Free Wifi.

+39 Gelato Bar
No. 29 Circular Road Singapore 049385
Opening Hours: 11am – 11pm (Mon-Sat)
https://www.facebook.com/plus39gelato

+39 Gelato Bar located at Circular Road uses the state-of-the-art IdeaTre machine from Carpigiani, makes their gelato fresh every day, and incorporates high quality ingredients sourced both locally and from Italy. Flavours change regularly, and you may expect Pistachio, Milo, Raspberry, Mango, Chilli Chocolate, Pineapple Lemon Basil, Chocoginger, and so other inventive additions. Warning, the gelato does melt fast though. (Read: +39 Gelato Bar Circular Road)

And Why
31 Bali Lane Singapore 189867
Tel: +65 6291 0993
Opening Hours: 8am – 8pm (Mon, Tues, Thurs), 9am – 9pm (Fri-Sun), Closed Wed
https://www.facebook.com/andwhyatbalilane

And Why is a play on the initials of ‘New York’, and the menu here is also inspired by the Big Apple City. The owners wanted to diversify the available styles of cuisines that are Halal in Singapore, thus the offerings of food such as Asparagusto & Pastrami ($18.90), Stripped-down Steak Sandwich ($19.90) and mocktails.

Baker’s Brew Studio
6 Jalan Tampang, Sembawang, Singapore 751468 (10-15 min walk from Sembawang MRT)
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 10pm (Mon-Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/bakersbrewstudios

Baker’s Brew Studio is a baking studio-café is located at Sembawang along Jalan Tampang. There is no fixed menu and the items change every day depending on the bakers present. If you are inspired by the bakes, approach these fun- loving bakers as they do offer baking classes there. No coffee yet though. Akang Datang. (Read: Baker’s Brew Studio Sembawang)

Churros Factory
15 Cheong Chin Nam Road (Alongside Al Azhar)
Opening Hours: 10.30am – 5.00pm

Ah, a churros-based cafe. Popular items are three pieces churros with chocolate drizzle ($4.00) and Raspy Burger ($6.50). Coffee such as Nutella Latte ($4.50) and Nutella Cino ($4.50) are available. We liked the raspberry flavoured ones, but the wait (more than 30 minutes) was too long. They ought to change the ice cream brand – the ‘cheap taste’ spoilt the entire experience.

Cake Avenue Bistro
33 Lorong Kilat #01-01 Kilat Centre Singapore 598132
Opening Hours: 10am – 5pm (Mon), 10am – 10pm (Tues-Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/CakeAvenueSG

Cake Avenue started as a home-owned business retailing online known for their 3D cakes, and have moved on to open café-concept bistro. Cakes we tried had an ‘old-school’ texture, and drinks could gear towards the sweet side.

The Betterfield
261 Waterloo Street #01-23 Singapore 180261
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Tues-Sun), Closed Mon
https://www.facebook.com/TheBetterField

Duck is in their flavour. The Betterfield is a relatively quiet café which seemed to fare better in their duck dishes, namely Pulled Duck Burger ($20) with charcoal buns and Duck Confit ($20). Chef had experience working in hotel and restaurant kitchens, and online reviews have been favourite. The better news, prices are nett.

Momo Café
47 Duxton Road Singapore 089511
Opening Hours: 12pm – 9pm (Mon-Thurs), 12pm – 11pm (Fri-Sat)
https://www.facebook.com/momocafesg

Momo has Group Therapy as neighbours, with a darker-than-usual ‘mood’ ambience that we liked. We cannot say much about their food though – the lava cake didn’t flow and waffles were dry. We hope it is just opening jitters and they will iron things out.

Finding great new food places to venture? The hotzone for new openings in Singapore for April is definitely Keong Siak and Tanjong Pagar, with Banana Tree, Neon Pigeon, Working Capitol and strangely named Lollapalooza opening their firsts there.

Talking about strange names, nothing can really beat FYR Cycene Ond Drinc. What? This is pronounced as as ‘FIRE Kitchen And Drink’. Trying too hard or what?

Waterfall Ristorante Italiano
Shangri-La Hotel Singapore, Level One, Garden Wing. 22 Orange Grove Road, Singapore 258350
Opening Hours: 12pm – 3pm Lunch, 6pm – 10:30pm Dinner (Mon-Sun)
Reserve Online Now: http://goo.gl/qTPB4Q

The revamp of Waterfall Ristorante Italiano at Shangri-La Hotel is in line with the appointment of Chef De Cuisine Chef Marco De Vincentis who specialises in Southern Italian cuisine. Of all the dishes presented, the pasta items were also my personal favourite, especially the Tagliolini Al Pesto Siciliano ($22) – long flat ribbon pasta with ricotta cheese, pine nut, basil and roasted almond. Other than the a la carte menu, Waterfall’s Antipasti Semi-Buffet Lunch features a rotating menu of freshly baked bread, daily fish special, cold cuts, cheeses, salads, fresh seafood, live pasta and meat carving stations, pizza-station and gelato. (Waterfall Ristorante Italiano Shangri-La Hotel)

House of Peranakan Petit
42 Eng Hoon Street (Tiong Bahru Estate), Singapore 169785
Tel: +65 6222 1719
Opening Hours: 12pm – 3pm, 6pm – 10pm, Closed Tues

House of Peranakan Cuisine opened this petit restaurant at Tiong Bahru estate as fans requested for another branch closer to the West. Peranakan favourites can be found on its menu: Ngoh Hiang ($12), Otak Otak ($12), Itek Tim ($10), Garam Assam Fish ($18), Ayam Buah Keluak ($18), Itek Sioh ($18), and Babi Ponteh ($16). We liked most of the dishes. Nothing overly fanciful, still delicious, even heart-warming as the meal felt like a home-cooked one. (Read: House Of Peranakan Petit Tiong Bahru)

Brothers Ramen
10 Anson Road, International Plaza #01-20 Singapore 079903 (Tanjong Pagar MRT)
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 3pm, 6pm – 8:30pm (Mon-Sat), Opened PH, Closed Sun

Run by hunky brothers Cai Weili and Weisheng, the Japanese ramen shop which used to be called Homebaked Dough located at a coffeeshop within Tanjong Pagar Plaza, found a new location at nearby International Plaza. This time, a restaurant with a self-service vending machine. Selection available included Brothers Ramen ($12.90), Chicken Ramen ($12.90), Spicy Ramen ($13.90), Chashu Ramen ($14.90) and the Supermen ($16.90) which would come with more pieces of pork chashu. The recipe is changed though. (Read: Brothers Ramen International Plaza)

IPPUDO SG @ Shaw Centre
1 Scotts Road, #04-22/23 Shaw Centre, Singapore 228208
Tel: +65 6235 2547
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 10pm (last order for ramen at 9.30pm, last order for sides at 9.00pm)

One more Ippudo at the Orchard Road belt. The ramen exclusive to the Shaw Centre branch is the Tan Tan Tonkotsu ($16), with Japanese sesame paste blended with their signature tonkotsu broth, topped with spicy minced pork miso, pork loin chashu and coriander. The broth is spicy but not overly, with a touch of zest from the fresh lemon. (Read: Ippudo SG Shaw Centre)

Skinny Salads
#01-03 100AM Shopping Mall, 100 Tras Street, Singapore 079027 (Tanjong Pagar MRT)
Tel: +65 64442136
Opening Hours: 8am – 8pm (Mon-Sun)

The Spa Espirit group has always been known for working with the right partners, this time with New Zealander celebrity chef Philip Davenport who appeared on The Toque 12. Eight salad and seven wraps varieties are available, with flavours inspired from Europe and Asian countries of Japan, Vietnam and Thailand. Thus, you would find rather different Green Papaya and Snake Beans ($9) with Nahm Jin (Thai dipping sauce) dressing, Cabbage with Nouc Cham dressing ($9) and Soba & Watercress ($11.50). (Read: Skinny Salads Tanjong Pagar)

Neon Pigeon
1 Keong Saik Street, #01-03 Singapore 089109
Opening Hours: 6pm – 12am (Mon-Sat)

Neon Pigeon seemed promising, reminding me of those certain types of hipster social houses from Hong Kong, in particular Yardbird – because they both served modern Japanese Izakaya style food and feature fowls in their names. Australian chef Justin Hammond who was previously from Gingerboy in Melbourne, helmed the kitchen. The menu was divided into Birdfeed (tapas sized starters), Miso Soup, Vegetables, Seafood, Meat & Poultry and Rice. Price range from $8 to $18 for a single portion, and an ordering guide would be 6-8 small plates for 2 pax. (Read: Neon Pigeon Keong Siak)

Lollapalooza
1A Keong Saik Road Singapore 089109
Tel: +65 6221 3538
Opening Hours: Lunch (coming soon): 11:45am to 2pm, Dinner: 6pm to 11pm

Just next door to Neon Pigeon, the team from Lolla at Ang Siang set up this produce-centric restaurant where the menu changes all the time. There are no entrees or main courses. Signature items include Flatbread ($8-$16), Braised Tuna Eye with Salsa Verde ($44), Dog Cockle Tartare ($30) and Wagyu Ribeye Cap ($55). With these prices, be prepared to spend a small bomb.

FYR Cycene Ond Drinc
19 Boon Tat Street Singapore 069619
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 11pm (Mon-Fri), 9am – 11pm (Sat), 9am – 4pm (Sun)

How do you even pronounce this? Fire it is. Main courses and desserts are whipped up using Josper Charcoal Oven. And lychee wood, which gives the dishes a smoky note. Recommended items from them include Baked Freshly-Shucked Oysters (S$15), Grain-fed US Holstein Cow Ribeye 365 Days ($32), as well as Baked Pistachio Melt & Pandan Ice Cream (S$10).

Oka Sushi Bar
Block 7 Tanjong Pagar Plaza, #01-108 Singapore 081007 (On Craig Road)
Tel: +65 6635 7309, 9853 9657
Opening Hours: Lunch: 11:30am – 2:30pm, Dinner 5:30pm – 11pm

While Tanjong Pagar is already flooded with Japanese ramen shops and Korean bars, this is a Japanese restaurant bar which serves bento boxes, hand-rolls and sushi sets. We were not overly impressed with our Yakiniku Beef ($10.80 for dine-in, $8.80 for takeaway) as the components were overly salty. Service was prompt though, and they probably need some time to fine-tune their processes.

Braseiro
333 Joo Chiat Road Singapore 427588
Opening Hours: 6pm-11pm (Mon-Thurs), 6pm-12am (Fri), 11am-3pm, 6-11pm (Fri-Sat)

A Brazilian barbecue restaurant concept, where “Braseiro” is the Portuguese name for “Brazier” – the ancestor of the barbecue. Main courses are all priced at $19.90, from a selection of beef steak, skewers, roasted chicken and the speciality of the month. Handmade French fries and fresh salad are available, unlimited.

Eatigo – 50% Discount For Restaurants In Singapore! No Hidden Cost. No Coupons Needed

50% discount for restaurants?! Okay, you must be thinking, “What’s the catch?” Ever heard of time-based discounts?

You can now reserve seats for restaurants plus get huge discounts via Daniel’s Food Diary Dining Deals (at the top right of this website).

Eatigo is the first company in Singapore (and probably in the world) to provide time based discounts for restaurants.

This is going to sound very exciting. So when you book online and dine at the participating restaurant, your discounts can be anything from 10% to 50%, depending on the time you dine.

Let me use an example. I tried booking for a lunch appointment for 2 at Flavours At Zhongshan Park.

If I make a reservation at the usual 12:30pm, the discount would be 30%.
At a slightly more peak time at 1pm, the discount would be 25%.
BUT if I go at a lesser peak period of 12pm, the discount is 50%!

EVERY restaurant on Eatigo has a 50% slot every day!

10 Reasons You Will Love Eatigo

1. Oh, the convenience. You can reserve via eatigo website, DanielFoodDiary.com (yeah!), iphone and android applications.

2. Up to 50% discounts. If you go during the off-time peak, you will get higher discount rates! (The other benefit is well, less diners in the restaurant.) Every restaurant on Eatigo has a 50% slot every day.

3. No hidden costs. The discounts apply to every food item on the menu and can be booked at no cost whatsoever.

4. Simple to use. 1) Go to eatigo or download their app IOS or Andriod, 2) search for your favorite restaurants and cuisines, 3) Select your date, time and number of people, and 4) Head down to the restaurant and enjoy your deal! Discounts are automatically applied. No more hassles with coupons and queues.

5. No hassle. Make restaurant reservations online WITHOUT the need to provide credit card details.

6. No need for print-out coupons. Instead you will receive a SMS confirmation or email notification for the reservations.

7. Plenty of dining choices. Participating restaurants in Singapore include Marriott Café, Flavours @ Zhongshan Park, Bangkok Jam, Spruce @ Firestation, Bodega Y Tapas, Ambush, Pind Balluchi, Caprillicious, Sync Korean Fusion Bistro, and California Pizza Kitchen.

Plus there will be new options every week.

8. All time, Every day. Discounts are available all the time (when the restaurant is opened lah).

9. Location based searches. At town and know not where to go, use eatigo’s location based searches to help you find the nearest restaurants with the most affordable discounted rates.

10. Bangkok. You can use eatigo in Bangkok too!

The eatigo business model effectively takes the yield management principles of charging different prices at different times used successfully in the airline and hotel industry and applies them to the F&B sector.

This works perfectly well for me, as I usually have my lunches and dinners during off-peak hours anyway.

Head over to eatigo to make your bookings now. Remember to jio your friends!

* This entry is brought to you in partnership with eatigo.

Time really flies, and it is already May. We are quite sure that new cafes in Singapore for 2015 have hit the 100 mark, and café hoppers are getting well…(fill in the blanks)

Trends for new cafés in Singapore include
– Korean (O’ma Spoon, Bing Go Jung, Snowman Desserts and Nunsaram)
– Tarts and art (Tarte by Cheryl Koh, Red Baron, Maison De The, Art, Art and Away)
– More ice cream (Density Frozen Custard, The Daily Scoop, Yogart, Ben & Jerry’s, Yogart, Lickers – what a name!)
– Bread and toast (Crown Bakery, Dazzling Cafe)
– Brunch (Rise and Grind, Krave at Bali Lane, The Living Room Zion Bishan, Car-rousel) and Coffee (Mavrx Coffee)

10 New Cafes In Singapore May 2015

Crown Bakery & Café
557 Bukit Timah Road, Crown Centre #01-03 Singapore 269694
Tel: +65 6463 3066
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 9:30pm (Sun-Thurs), 7:30am – 1030pm (Fri-Sat)

The florist opens a bakery. Ah huh, popular Far East Flora collaborates with Japan’s Signifant Signifé to offer more than 40 types of bread, viennoiseries & snacks. Go for the Hainanese Chicken Bread for chicken rice in a loaf. Made from chicken soup, skinless chicken thigh, garlic, ginger and shallots, best savoured when dipped in garlicky chicken rice chilli sauce. Breakfast doesn’t get that boring anymore.

Dazzling Café Singapore
15 Stamford Road, #01-85 Capitol Piazza, Singapore 178906 (City Hall MRT)
Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday, 12pm to 8pm

Despite the hype, Dazzling Café dazzled for their toasts, but razzled out for the savouries. The appeal of Dazzling had to be the décor, and hospitable plus cutesy Taiwanese-style service, where waitresses dressed as Japanese-style French chambermaids serve the signature thick toasts in prettiness. We hear varied comments – the toasts were pretty, the waffles were okay, and the pastas flat-tasting. (Read: Dazzling Café Singapore Capitol Piazza)

O’ma Spoon Korean Dessert Café
6 Raffles Boulevard #01-01/02/03 Marina Square Singapore 039594
313 @ Somerset Orchard Road #04-20/32 Singapore 238895 (Opening soon)
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm Daily

This shop means ‘mother’s spoon’’. While the Patbingsu ($11.90) and Injoelmi ($11.90) are still reasonable in price, the Choco Brownie ($18.80), Mixed Berry ($18.80) to a rather steep Mango Berry Cheesecake ($22.80) may make customers think twice. We tried the Patbingsu ($11.90) and quite liked it. Ingredients such as the red bean ‘Korean pat’ and injeolmi are imported from Korea. The milk shaved ice was smooth and finely-shaved, had a soft yet instantaneous melt-in-your-mouth effect. (Read: O’ma Spoon Marina Square)

Bing Go Jung Korean Dessert House
Bt Timah Plaza (next to taxi stand), 1 Jalan Anak Bukit, Singapore 588996
Opening Hours: 10am – 11pm

Bing Go Jung Korean Dessert House’s new branch is at Bt Timah Plaza, a strategic venue to target the active Korean and expat community in the area. Their bingsu varieties sold here include the popular Milk & Red Bean ($11), Injeolmi ($11), Green Tea ($11) Coffee ($11) and an intriguing Tomato ($11), along with toast, grilled sandwiches and chewy waffles. We liked them, but competition for bingsu, is just too strong. (Read: Bing Go Jung Bt Timah Plaza)

Rise & Grind Coffee Co.
Bukit Timah Plaza, 1 Jalan Anak Bukit #L1-CA1, Bukit Timah, Singapore 588996

MavRx Coffee Apothecary
1A Duxton Hill Singapore 089587
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 4:30pm Mon-Fri

MavRx Coffee Apothecary has quietly popped up at 1A Duxton Hill, a small outfit with two benches on the sides of the wall. Decor was minimalistic, black and one tiles, a lonesome guitar was spotted on the floor marked with #MavrxCoffee. Hole in the wall, a one-man barista coffee place, with charming monochromatic décor, which serves nothing but good coffee. (Read: Mavrx Coffee Duxton Hill)

Maison De The
Thomson V Two, 11 Sin Ming road #01-13, Singapore 575629

Maison De The replaces boutique café OZ Specialty Coffee at its location at Thomson V Two, serving the same bakes as Toa Payoh’s Les Patisseries with tea. (Read: Maison De The Thomson V2)

Density Frozen Custard
4 Short Street Singapore 188212
Opening Hours: 12pm – 12am Mon-Sun

Frozen Custard, probably the first of its kind in Singapore. Prices were $4 for single scoop, $7 for double, $9.50 for triple, and $9 for a two scoop sundae with 2 toppings and sauce. The texture was true to its name ‘denser’, smooth and creamy, won’t feel like there is air or ice crystals ‘trapped’ within. It reminded me of a velvety version of thickened gelato. (Read: Density Frozen Custard Short Street)

The theme for this month is “From this to that”. New branches, overseas expansion, second outlets.

Other new openings in Singapore include Chinese tapas bar Sum Yi Tai (Boon Tat Street), health bistro Food With Benefits (Katong Shopping Centre), American food and brunch restaurant G House (Dempsey), Opus Bar & Grill (Hilton), GreenDot (Westgate) and Miam Miam (Tampines One). (Cafes are on a separate list: 10 New Cafes In Singapore May 2015)

Daniel’s Food Diary has visited the following 10 places, and tell you how it went. 10 New & Hot Restaurants Singapore May 2015 – From This To That

Tarte by Cheryl Koh and Caveau Bar
1 Scotts Road, Shaw Centre #01-12, Singapore 228208
Tel: +65 62353225
Opening Hours: 10:30am – 7:30pm

From Les Amis to Tarte.

Caveau Bar went through a facelift, with a new takeaway tart outlet appearing next door. Les Amis’s very own Pastry Chef Cheryl Koh helms her own, selling just tarts and carolines for now. Tarts at Tarte are available in two seizes – 8cm ($8-$9) and 16cm ($30-$34). Limited quantity, baked fresh every day, quality ingredients, good stuff. We predict that this will be a hit with tai-tais and others.

Haha Thai
Ngee Ann City, #05-29 391 Orchard Road Singapore 238873 (Orchard MRT)
Tel: +65 62994401
Opening Hours: 11am – 11pm Daily

From Lavender to Orchard.

Family-owned Thai restaurant (previously known as Hahaha Seafood Restaurant) moved from Foch Road to Ngee Ann City. We tried the Haha Bak Mee ($10.80), Beef Noodle Soup ($10.80), Phad Thai ($10.80), Haha Fried Rice ($11.80 which came in choice of 3 types of flavoured rice), Haha Otah ($8.80) and Boneless Chicken Wings ($12.80) – some hits, some misses. The Mango Sticky Rice with Ice Cream ($11.80) was a work of art, and mangoes fresh and sweet. Liked the ice cream, but rice could be stickier with a tinge of salt. (Read: Haha Thai Ngee Ann City)

WHEAT
International Plaza #01-19, 10 Anson Road Singapore 079903 (Tanjong Pagar MRT)
Tel: +65 62214656
Opening Hours: 10:30am – 8:30pm (Mon-Fri), Closed Weekends & PH

From Raffles Place to Tanjong Pagar.

WHEAT, which was known as Wheat Baumkuchen, opened its 3rd branch at International Plaza. It has come a long way. The three most popular items were the Penguin ($7.80) – green soba with shredded chicken, eggs, salad, and sesame sauce, Salmon ($9.00) – grilled salmon with green soba, salad and yuzu sauce, and Bull Run ($8.00) – grilled teriyaki chicken, green soba and salad. Popular with CBD office ladies and executives.(Read:WHEAT International Plaza)

Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant
Capitol Piazza #02-27/28/29, 13 Stamford Road Singapore 178905 (City Hall MRT)
Tel: +65 67021838
Opening Hours: 11am – 10:30pm

From London to Singapore.

THAT Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant famous for their roast duck, with some reviews saying it is “the best roast duck in the world” has opened in Singapore – the 4th city after London, Shanghai and Bangkok. A Four Season Roasted Duck would cost a premium price of $68 for a whole ($36 for half and $22 for portion) in Singapore, hardly cheap at all. the Roast Duck did have a delectable sauce, seemingly a mixture of soy sauce, sweetener, herbs and spices. Some parts of the duck meat were tougher than expected, and there wasn’t a crisp golden outer skin as claimed to be. Underwhelming. (Read: Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant Capitol Piazza)

The Rösti Farm
Capitol Piazza 13 Stamford Road #02-31, Singapore 178905 (City Hall MRT)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 8pm (Soft launch phase)

From Once Upon A Rosti to Rosti Farm.

Anyone remembers Once Upon A Rösti? They are now The Rosti Farm where rosti takes centre-stage here, appearing in main courses such as 100% Angus Beef & Maple Bacon Bombs with Single Rosti ($18, with Double Rosti $3 extra), The Happy Weekender ($20) where you get German bratwurst infused with real beer, sautéed mushroom, grilled pineapple and an overeasy egg, Mermaid’s Seafood Platter ($16) and Sir All Day Breakfast ($14). Food tended to be on the salty side, and needed some refinements. (Read: The Rosti Farm Capitol Piazza)

Pho Tai
Capitol Piazza #B2-54, 13 Stamford Road Singapore 178906 (City Hall MRT)
Tel: +65 67021181
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 9.30pm

From Paris to Singapore.

This family-owned Vietnamese restaurant had its origins from Paris. The Vietnam-born Chinese family moved to Paris during the 70s to find safety during times of war, and subsequently started Pho Tai in the city of romance. The signature items include Beef Steak Slices and Combination Pho ($9.90), Steamed Rice Pancake Rolls ‘Banh Cuon’ ($7.80), Fresh Spring Rolls ($4.80). Marinated Beef Vermicelli ‘Bo Bun’ ($12.80), Red beans with Coconut Milk ($6.00) and Banana and Coconut Milk ($4.30). While Pho Tai may not be as polished, we liked it homely style offerings and I can safely say, they offer one my favourite pho in Singapore. (Read: Pho Tai Capitol Piazza)

Good Chance Popiah
No. 1 Jalan Berseh #01-15 New World Centre Singapore 209037
Tel: +65 96229445
Opening Hours: 11.00am – 2:30pm, 6pm – 9.30pm

From Silat Ave to Jalan Besar.

DIY Hokkien Popiah shop Good Chance Popiah has opened another branch at New World Centre, replacing well, McDonalds. 3rd generation owner “Ah Boy” says it is a good chance (pun not intended) and opportunity for the restaurant to expand after being around for 30 years. Wrapping your own may be more expensive than your usual hawker stall prices outside – 4 rolls are at $16.80, while 6 rolls are at $22.80. Chinese sausage, prawns and crab meat at additional cost.

Noodle Café – Thai Boat Noodles
1 Rochor Canal #01-05 Sim Lim Square, Singapore 188504 (near taxi-stand)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 9pm

From Golden Mile to Sim Lim.

After finding some popularity at Golden Mile, Noodle Café quickly opens another at Sim Lim. There were five steps on the menu to customise the boat noodles: choose the meat (beef, beef liver, beef ball, pork, pork liver, pork ball), size ($1.9 or $5), noodles (bee hoon, kway tiao, glass noodles, tung hoon, meekia), taste (dry, soup, clear or tom yum) and level of spiciness. The flavours were still one of the strongest, and possibly closest to those sold in the street-side stalls in Thailand. (Read: Noodle Café Sim Lim)

Ssiksin Chicken
Serangoon NEX #02-04 (Within Ministry of Food) Singapore 238858 (Serangoon MRT)
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10pm (Mon-Sun)

From BBQ to Chicken.

The Korean Fried Chicken fever does not stop. Ssiksin Chicken opened by Daessiksin Korean BBQ offers Original Fried Chicken ($8 for 2 pieces, $15 for 4, $28 for 8), Seasoned Spicy Chicken ($9, $16, $30) and Soy Sauce Chicken ($9, $16, $30). One of the favourites was the Spicy Seasoned Chicken ($9 for 2, $16 for 4, $30 for 8) where the chicken was evenly coated with a sticky-salty-spicy sauce specially imported from Korea. Can you take the spiciness? (Read: Ssiksin Chicken NEX)

FIX Grill
31 Ah Hood Rd, HomeTeamNS-JOM Clubhouse, #01-07 Singapore 329979
Tel: +65 6397 5662
Opening hours: 11am-3pm, 5.30-10.30pm, last orders 30 min beforeclosing (Tues – Sun)
Closed Mon and last Tues of the month

From Café to Grill.

Next door to FIX Café is FIX Grill, supposedly a casual Mediterranean grill concept. Signatures are their skewers, ranging from Greek Beef Keftedes, Lamb Moussaka, Chicken Tsukune Yakitori and Homemade Prawn & Fish Cake. An assorted combination is $25. We liked the Slow-Roasted Half Chicken ($19) served with a porcini cream sauce. The restaurant feels it needs a strong identity and stronger specialities.

New Restaurants and Food Places At Capitol Piazza

$

The historical Capitol Theatre has re-opened, and the new mall Capitol Piazza which is connected directly to City Hall MRT station will be home to many restaurants, cafes and eating spots.

What’s good: New to Singapore, and new-to-market brands. Famous overseas outlets of Angelina Paris, Four Seasons from Baywater London and Taiwan’s Dazzling Café, along with modern Italian restaurant Equilibrium, Breadtalk-owned 1933 and Japanese bar Zaku look set to appeal to foodies.

The challenges. With other high end and new malls such as Scotts Square and Orchard Gateway having a less than lustre performance, the question is: Does Singapore need another high end mall?

Angelina Singapore
#01-82, Capitol Galleria, 15 Stamford Road, Singapore 178906
Opening Soon

Famous fashion icon Coco Chanel always dined there – the Parisian tearoom. Now that Angelina is finally coming to Singapore, look out for their two signature items: the Old-Fashioned Hot Chocolate “L’Africain”, and Mont Blanc.

The hot chocolate made with three different kinds of African cocoa from Niger, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoir could blow the minds off chocolate lovers. Warning, it is stupendously rich. The icon Mont Blanc has a different recipe from the usual, combining chest paste vermicelli, with light whipped cream and a layer of meringue at the bottom.

Dazzling Café Singapore
15 Stamford Road, #01-85 Capitol Piazza, Singapore 178906
Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday, 12pm to 8pm

Despite the hype, Dazzling Café dazzled for their toasts, but razzled out for the savouries. The appeal of Dazzling had to be the décor, and hospitable plus cutesy Taiwanese-style service, where waitresses dressed as Japanese-style French chambermaids serve the signature thick toasts in prettiness.

We hear varied comments – the toasts were pretty, the waffles were okay, and the pastas flat-tasting. (Read: Dazzling Café Singapore)

Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant

Spizza Mercato
13 Stamford Road #B2-52 Capitol Piazza Singapore 178905
Tel: +65 6702 1835
Opening Hours: 10.30am – 10.30pm

The latest concept of Spizza is Spizza Mercato at Capitol Piazza, where ‘mercato’ stands for market to reflect its retail section. Therefore other than the casual dining area, there is an rea dedicated to takeaways and retail purchases.

For busy executives, you can grab their packaged takeaway items such as salads and pastas off the shelves, as well as purchase soups, sauces, fresh pasta and olive oil that are actually used in their kitchens. The pizza was the usual standard, though starters were a let-down. (Read: Spizza Mercato)

1933 Singapore
Capitol Piazza 15 Stamford Road, #01-83, Singapore 178906
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm

Opened by the BreadTalk group, 1933 serves local favourites in a Western setting, offering such as Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice and Nanyang Curry Chicken in a bread bowl.

Other restaurants and cafes:
Bounce Smoothie Bar, Casa Italia, Equilibrium Modern Italian Bacaro and Ristornate, Hoshino Coffee, Jstory, Kaiserhaus, llao llao, Ma Maison, Tap Craft Beer Bar, Teuscher Chocolates, Zaku

Look out here for updates.

How The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is compiled

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is compiled from the votes of The Diners Club® World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, an influential group of almost 1,000 international leaders in the restaurant community.

The Academy comprises 27 separate regions around the world, each of which has 36 members including a chairperson. Of the seven votes each member is allocated, at least three votes must recognize restaurants outside of the academy member’s own region.

Each region’s panel is made up of food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and highly regarded ‘gastronomes’. Members list their choices in order of preference based on their best restaurant experiences in the previous 18 months, with no pre-determined check-list of criteria.

10 New Cafes In Singapore June 2015 – Is The Cafe Hopping Trend Slowing Down?

$
0
0

Almost half the year has went by us, and a whooping number of more than 100 cafes has opened in Singapore for 2015.

By contrast, almost 100 cafes which opened last year in 2014 have also closed, according to figures from Singapore’s Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority. There are some which ended their operations in a month of operations. So what happened?

Let us show more love to cafes which deserve our support, and may the new cafes continue to deliver quality food and service to keep people coming back.

10 New Cafes In Singapore June 2015

Angelina Singapore
Capitol Galleria #01-82, 15 Stamford Road Singapore 178906 (City Hall MRT)
Tel: +65 63840481
Opening Hours: 10am – 8pm

Parisian tearoom Angelina arrives in Singapore. Look out for their two signature items: the Old-Fashioned Hot Chocolate “L’Africain” ($12), and Mont Blanc ($13.50). The hot chocolate made with three different kinds of African cocoa from Niger, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoir could blow the minds off chocolate lovers. Warning, it is stupendously rich. Brunch items such as Croque Madame ($21), Parisian Club Sandwiches ($21) and Truffle Omelette ($25) are available. This is tai-tai kind of place.

1933 Singapore
Capitol Piazza 15 Stamford Road #01-83 Singapore 178906 (City Hall MRT)
Tel: +65 6348 3660
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm

1933 pays tribute to the original year the iconic and historical Capitol Theatre building was completed. The food is said to be influenced by local cuisine in the 1930s, with the offering of the likes of Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice ($16.80) and Nanyang Curry Chicken ($14.90). In case you are wondering, 1933 is opened by the BreadTalk Group, and it won’t be very wrong to say this is an upscale version of Toast Box.

O’ma Spoon Korean Dessert Café
313 @ Somerset, 313 Orchard Road #04-20/32 Singapore 238895 (Somerset MRT)
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10pm (Mon-Thurs, Sun), 11:30am – 12am (Fri-Sat)

O’ma Spoon opened two cafes in quick succession – one in Marina Square, the other 313 Somerset. We liked the Mango Berry Cheesecake Bingsu ($18.80) which was pretty spot-on, with both light cheese cake and ice cream (oh, the calories), with scattering of cranberries for that touch of sourness. Honey Toast is also available, though we found them quite average.

Nunsaram Korean Dessert Cafe
181 Orchard Road #05-51/52 Orchard Central, Singapore 238896 (Somerset MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon-Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/NUNSARAMSG

Owner of Nunsaram stressed that this is a “real Korean dessert café”. Bingsu are priced between $12.90 and $15.90, an additional $1.50 for a scoop of ice cream and $2.50 for red beans. The side menu consists of Tteogkkochi (Korean rice cakes on skewers) that comes in 3 variations: Honey ($4.50), Spicy ($4.90) and Cheese ($5.90) and Injeolmi Toast ($5.90). Their bingsu were photogenic, and shaved milk soft and refined.

Snowy Village
120A Prinsep Street Singapore 187937 (near Lasalle, Sim Lim Square)
Tel: +65 88221702
Opening Hours: 10am – 9pm Daily
https://www.facebook.com/snowyvillagesingapore>

Is this Singapore’s first container café? Items offered: Korean Snowy Bingsoo ($12,90 – $14.50), Injelomi Toast ($5.40), Drug Corn ($5.00), Waffle ($6.00), Salad ($6.00) and beverages. Coffee ($5.00) is from the Nespresso Dulce Gusto capsule. $5. Don’t say you were not warned. For the sake of novelty and boosting rights, this container café should attract some customers.

Cream & Custard
46 Jalan Bukit Ho Swee #01-894, Singapore 160046 (5 min walk from Tiong Bahru MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm (Tue-Sun), Closed Mon
https://www.facebook.com/creamandcustardsg

A bakery café at Jalan Bt Ho Swee. Opened by sister and brother team Melissa and Wesley Hoe, Cream & Custard could cater to the residents and office workers nearby, providing an alternative dessert selection for the sweet-tooth. The bakes included Passionfruit Meringue, Praline Chocolate Crunch, Strawberry Shortcake, Triple Chocolate Devil, Tropical Delight and Tiramisu. Prices between $5-$7.

Dessert Project
22 Havelock Road #01-673 Singapore 160022
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon-Thurs), 11am – 11pm (Fri-Sat), 12am – 10pm (Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dessert-Project/817279425023299

Another café at Jalan Bt Ho Swee, this serving ice cream, waffles and toast. Dessert Project offers ice cream ($3.80 for single scoop, $4.20 for premium flavours) with some rather varied flavours – think White Truffle (seriously, it almost reminded me of truffle fries), Parma Ham with Melon, and White Rabbit Candy. Loved the textures, though slightly sweet.

Krave Cafe
28 Bali Lane Singapore 189864
Tel: +65 86434557
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10pm (Tues-Thurs, Sun), 11:30am – 11pm (Fri-Sat), Closed Mon
https://www.facebook.com/Krave.sg

The chef in charge of Krave is Chef Sufiyan Safee, with a resume of being Suria’s cookshow host (Is he a celebrity chef then?) and helming Jimmy Monkey’s kitchen. Offerings include Truffle Fries ($10), Calamari ($8), Drumlets ($8), Chicken Caesar ($8), Vanilla French Toast ($8), Pizza ($12-$16), Pasta ($8-$16) and Chocolate Lava Cake ($9). While the décor of Krave was straight forward and simple, it was the homely food which combined Malay-Western influences that makes this café worth a visit if you are at the vicinity.

Selfie Coffee Singapore
11 Haji Lane Singapore 189204
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm
https://www.facebook.com/selfiecoffeesg

The Selfie Coffee Café at hipster stretch Haji Lane is from the Malaysian chain, which retains its bizarre concept, jungle theme and doodle tables. Light bites such as pies and cake slices are available. Basically, you take a picture of your face there, and that would be printed on foam similar to cake frostings. Drink your face? Rather gimmicky lah.

Coffee Cup
Block 11, Jalan Bukit Merah, #01-4444, Singapore 150011 (10-15 min walk from Redhill MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 8pm (Mon-Fri), 11am – 7pm (Sat), Closed Sun
https://www.facebook.com/coffeecup.sg

Nestled beside ABC Brickworks Food Centre, Coffee Cup finds itself in the most unlikely of places. Its coffee, ironically, is quite ordinary. The old-school styled bakes are freshly made in house daily. Mango and Oreo Cheesecakes are sold at $4 each, Chocolate fudge cake and carrot cake at $5 each whereas assorted cupcakes are priced at $1.80 each.

10 New & Hot Restaurants Singapore June 2015 – Burgers, Yakitori, Crabs and More Fried Chicken

There are more specialty restaurants establishing in Singapore. Burgers joints, modern Japanese izakaya, Louisiana style crabs and Korean fried chicken restaurants continue to enjoy their boom.

MEATLiquor from London, and London Fat Duck (not from London) are highly anticipated openings. We continue to eat our way through, to tell you which are worth your calories and money.

10 New & Hot Restaurants Singapore June 2015 – Burgers, Yakitori, Crabs and More Fried Chicken. (Cafes are in this list.)

MEATLiquor
99 Duxton Road Singapore 089543
Tel: +65 6221 5343
Opening Hours: 5pm – 2am (Tues-Fri), 5pm – 3am (Sat), Closed Sun

MEATLiquor known for their American style comfort food finally arrived from London. Singapore is the burger joint’s first international debut outpost.

The menu features their signature dishes such as The Dead Hippie ($22), Dirty Chicken Burger ($18), Fried Pickles ($9), Chili Cheese Fries ($18) and some local adaptations namely the Sambal Wings ($15) and Sambal Fries ($10). Hits and misses.

Izakaya 95
3 Punggol Point #02-05 The Punggol Settlement Singapore 828694
Tel: +65 63841132
Opening Hours: 5pm – 12am (Tues-Fri), 1:30pm – 12am (Sat), 12:30pm – 12am (Sun, PH), Closed Mon

The 2nd storey of Punggol Settlement is an enclave with loads of good food. Izakaya 95 is a hidden find, selling yakitori and Japanese food, with a to-live-for view, especially when you come during the evenings.

Other than the grilled items, I liked the Garlic Fried Rice ($6), a steal for its price.

Bar Bar Black Sheep
17D Lorong Liput Singapore 277731 (Holland Village MRT)
Tel: +65 6463 2161
Opening Hours: 12pm – 2:30pm, 5:30pm – 11pm (Mon-Thurs); 12pm – 2:30pm, 5:30pm – 12am (Fri), 12pm – 12am (Sat), 12pm – 11pm (Sun)

Bar Bar Black Sheep is already known to serve some of the most affordable fare, with a huge variety of food all under one roof. The Holland Village Bar Bar Black Sheep features both an alfresco and indoor air-conditioned dining area, with live acoustic band performing Tuesdays to Saturdays from 7:30pm.

While North Indian and Western food are also available, Japanese Izakaya style yakitori is this outlet’s focus. Prices are still pretty reasonable – $4.90 for skewers of two. Even the premium items such as Mentai Salmon, Mentai Scallop, Mentai Tiger Prawns, Grilled Unagi and Ishiyaki Ribeye Beef that cost $6.90-$7.90 for two pieces. Lunch set goes for $10 nett.

London Fat Duck
6 Scotts Road #B1-16/17 Scotts Square Singapore 228209 (Orchard MRT)
Tel: +65 6443 7866
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon-Fri), 10am – 10pm (Sat, Sun, PH)

This London Fat Duck brand may not have come originally from London, but has proven its worth. Its Signature Roast Duck ($48.80 for whole, $26 for half, $12.80 for regular) was easily the more impressive of the two – tender with bite, wonderfully marinated, flavourful every mouthful.

Also try its Black Pepper London Duck Bun ($4.80 for 3).

Three Litte Pigs
391 Orchard Road #B2-32 Takashimaya Ngee Ann City, Singapore 238872 (Orchard MRT)
Tel: +65 68364988
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10pm (Mon-Thurs), 11am – 10pm (Fri-Sun)

Opened at the basement of Ngee Ann City, selling mainly pork. For a restaurant in Orchard Road, the price point is fairly reasonable. Appetisers range from $5.80 to $9.80, while mains are between $16.80 and $19.80.

Some pigs here had a worthy death, while some could have died in vain. Go for the Pork Chops ($16.80 – $19.80) .

Tonkin
Orchard Central #B1-02, 181 Orchard Road Singapore 238896
Tel: +65 6444 4406
Opening Hours: 11am – 9:30pm

Tonkin a Vietnamese Noodle Bar has opened at Orchard Central, with another two outlets at Tanjong Pagar 100AM and Clifford Centre.

Fairly predictable stuff. The Beef Combination Noodle Soup ($9.90) had rather light soup base, with consideration addition of fresh herbs and vegetables. Good for those who prefer broth that is not so heavy or robust.

Wholly Crab
Satay by the Bay, 18 Marina Gardens Drive, Singapore 018953 (A very long walk from Bayfront MRT)
Opening hours: 2pm – 10pm (Sun-Thurs), 2pm – 11pm (Fri, Sat, eve of PH, PH)

Wholly Crab has some star factor, opened by popular local actress Felicia Chin. The concept itself is a japalang mix of Louisiana seafood, Chinese style zhi char, local inspired sauces, with some Western-Japanese sides.

A ‘Love Bucket’ meant for 2-3 people is priced at $60, while a Wholly Bucket for 5-6 is at $123. For the smaller bucket, we had 1 crab, 8 prawns, 250 grams of mussels, 250 grams of clams, corn, potatoes, sausages and 1 side dish, such as Sweet potato Fries and Thai Mango Salad.

Choo Choo Chicken (Orchard Cineleisure)
Cathay Cineleisure Orchard, 8 Grange Road #03-06 Singapore 239695 (Somserset MRT)
Tel: +65 6299 0980
Opening Hours: 12pm – 11pm Daily

Choo Choo should be one of the best Korean Fried Chicken In Singapore. Fried chicken are served in flavours of Original, Soy, Spicy or Sweet, in the form of Whole Chicken ($29.90), Crispy Wings ($16/$29), or 8-Piece Wings ($16).

There are two new dishes at the Orchard Cineleisure branch – the Choo-Pa-Chi ($25) with chicken bites served on a plate with spring onions, poured over with a light sweet and sour sauce; and Rose Chicken ($30) which includes a rose cream sauce within a bread bowl. We say, stick to the fried chicken.

My Favourite Café
Bugis Cube, 470 North Bride Road #02-10 Singapore 18874 (Opposite Bugis MRT)
Other branch: Lucky Plaza, 304 Orchard Road #06-46/47 Singapore 238863 (Orchard Road MRT)
Opening Hours: 9am – 6pm (Closed Sun)

Those who are in the know would be familiar with Lucky Plaza’s very popular My Favourite Café Yong Tau Foo stall, attracting long queues during lunch time.

The stall known for two signature items – the handmade meatballs and Korean mushrooms, has just opened at Bugis Cube. Its other standard items are the usual boring stuff, but the meatballs (if freshly deep fried) are quite the bomb.

Tburu
Level 5, Orchard Gateway @ Emerald, Singapore 238851
Tel: ++65 62210004
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 2:30pm, 5:30pm – 10:30pm (Mon-Sun)

Tburu is not exactly very new, but think it requires some publicity. The restaurant set at Level 5 of Orchard Gateway, has a view of Orchard Central opposite, with a sushi bar spanning 4 metres in an open concept. Scores for the ambience.

While food quality wise would require some fine-tuning, its $50 Omakase promo is too value-for-money to be missed.

120 New Cafes In Singapore 2015 – The Ultimate Cafe Listing

120 new cafes in Singapore 2015. Did the number surprise you again?

To facilitate your café hopping adventures in Singapore, this is a new cafes list sorted by location and in alphabetical order. If your favourite new cafe is not found here, it is likely in last year’s list or too under the radar (that’s another problem).

The challenges for cafes in 2015 is aplenty. We have barely crossed mid-year, and a good percentage has already closed down.

Social media plays a huge role in getting their names out there and works as a double edge sword – drool-worthy food photos gets people interested, but also desensitized if we see the same-old waffles + eggs benedict + pancakes picture over and over again (Next!). Plus rental and labour problems.

On a personal note, this year I have been to at least 80% of the cafes here (or at least stepped at the door), so I do feel for many. Those that have been written before have a blue-coloured link.

Three things I would like to say to new cafe owners out there: Substance is more important than style; invest in some form of marketing (it’s not expensive really), and keep your Facebook pages updated. (I personally had trouble finding the simplest things such as the addresses and postal code, and then owners are surprised why nobody comes.)

There you have it. If I missed any out, it could be because
a) The café opened before the last quarter of 2014.
b) The café didn’t want any kind of publicity (True that. It happens.)
c) It’s a mass market brand.
d) It already closed (that’s fast.)
e) It is super off the radar. So let me know by commenting below.
*List will be updated again every end of the month

10 Trending Food For 2015 – Bingsu, Gourmet Burgers and Shibuya Toasts

Half the year has almost whizzed past us, and it would be appropriate to do a half-time report card of some of the trending food of Singapore in 2015.

Waffles, lobster rolls, frozen yogurts… emm yah, we still love these food trends. Llao llao still has its queues.

But let’s make some bold predictions of what foods have created some buzz, and what can be the next big thing.

Korean Bingsu
Early 2015, Daniel’s Food Diary wrote that the ulu Nunsongyee has opened, one of the first few Korean cafes in Singapore to sell authentic bingsu made with shaved milk.

Fast forward 6 months later, there are no less than 10 new Korean Bingsu shops in Singapore. The better shops generally use shaved milk (rather than ice) with quality ingredients such as injeolmi specially imported from Korean Apparently, Nunsongyee has done well enough to open their 2nd branch really soon.

Korean Fried Chicken
Korean Fried Chicken has been going strong for a good 2-3 years, and doesn’t look like stopping anything soon. These double-fried chicken wings all juicy and moist, glazed with savoury sauces of garlic or soy, are (borrowing an ad line) indeed finger-licking good. (Read: 10 Best Korean Fried Chicken In Singapore)

Shibuya Toast
Shibuya toasts have become dazzling again. Eating carbs with big scoops of ice cream and syrup doesn’t seem so sinful anymore, right? We love the Shibuya Toast from Loaves Me, Wa Café, Nam’s and Stateland Café – which has come out with a tasty chewy black toast with coconut ice cream. Don’t say I never tell you.

Gourmet Burgers
Not just any ordinary burgers, but ‘artisanal burgers’ and ‘gourmet burgers’ with home-made juicy patties and soft buns. The fast food types are $2-3. These are $20-$30. MEATLiquor from London has come to Singapore, Wildfire Kitchen does a pretty neat one, and you can even find them in the kopitiam.

Thai Boat Noodles
It all started with a humble shop at the basement of Golden Mile. These cheap (most priced them below $2), small bowls of ‘kuai teow ruea’ have even eating competitions dedicated to them. These noodles were originally sold by boat vessels in Thailand, created small to prevent spillage. Do note that Singapore’s versions are different because no pig’s blood can be added.

Mookata
Strange that in a hot country like Singapore, we love our Korean BBQ, Chinese hotpots. and Thai mookata – where you BBQ on a metal dome and with little soup around the skillet. Just in case, ‘moo’ means ‘pork’ and ‘kata’ means skillet. My Thai teacher was telling me mookata is not even this popular back home!

Beef Don
Chirashi don is quite 2014. We boldly predict that Beef Don, especially Wagyu Gyu Don will fast gain its popularity this year. For some of the best Gyu Don in Singapore, check out Fat Cow, The Sushi Bar, Kinsa Sushi and Babette.

Cold Brew
Elaborate coffee art and 3D latte no longer excite the Instagrammer foodporners that much. In fact, it has become quite the norm. The fashionable drink in a third wave hipster café is going to be the cold brew. Not just iced coffee. Coffee beans have to be steeped for hours to produce a concentrated essence, filtered, diluted with water, then served chilled. Refreshing for the hot weather.

Ducks
We didn’t quite envision this, but the roast duck has resurfaced again. Four Seasons from Bayswater London finally arrives in Singapore, only to realise a competitor London Fat Duck has opened at Scotts Square (though not from London). In a more local context, roast duck and meat shop Kay Lee sells their recipe and outlet for a whooping 4 million dollars. (My lady friend even ‘complained’ that 3 different men who wanted to date her all suggested eating roast ducks.)

Matcha
Hong Kong has gone ecstatic over matcha. Singapore took some time to warm up to the bitter green tea taste, but have soon found them in cakes, soft serves, lava cakes, waffles…just about any desserts you can name. (If you are a matcha fan, you must read this.)

So what do you think is the next big food trend in Singapore?

Singapore Restaurant Month – 50 of The Best Restaurants. 50 SG50 Dishes

$

0

This is such a meaningful initiative. SG50. 50 Restaurants. 50 newly created dishes.

The inaugural Singapore Restaurant Month organised by the Restaurant Association of Singapore (RAS) has gathered some of Singapore’s 50 Best Restaurants to create dishes to celebrate the country’s birthday.

What I really want to highlight is the common theme – that all the restaurants have to use local produce. Yes, support local!

You may be thinking, “Does the land-scarce Singapore have that many farms anyway?” Singapore produces 3 main types of food – fish, leafy vegetables and eggs (along with taugeh, mushrooms, and milk too).

The reasons for using local produce are aplenty. That includes supporting local farms, increasing our food security (in case anything happens) and enjoying fresher food. All of the dishes featured use at least one ingredient direct from the farms.

I have tried some of the dishes, and the ones I would personally recommend include the Fried Baby Barramundi from Palm Beach Seafood Restaurant. It is priced at the cost price of $18 for 500g of fish. $18!

The Chef explained this is priced to support our local fish farmers and the industry, and celebrate the country’s birthday in a meaningful way. (Do you know that there are more than a hundred fish farms in Singapore?)

The fish was moist and succulent, drizzled over with a spicy-tangy sauce and crispy shredded cuttlefish which were like fried vermicelli.

The other that got me clearing my plate clean was the 3 Grain Laska Risotto with homemade Pulau Ubin Seabass Fishcake from Portico (part of a 5-course $50 menu) which was kind of a deconstructed dish incorporating creativity.

I liked the laksa sauce that was cleverly integrated, which adds a beautiful notch of the local factor.

Putien’s “Cityscape” inspired by the Singapore skyline (check out ‘MBS’ & ‘The Flyer’ on the dish) makes a photogenic dish to remember the year as well.

10 New Cafes In Singapore July 2015 – Keong Siak, Bugis Get More Happening

Welcome to the 2nd half of 2015. Coincidence or what! Many new cafes in Singapore are found at Keong Saik, and the Bugis, Arab Street, Beach Road vicinity.

Both Stateland Coffee and Hyde & Co had recent menu revamps, and Cake Love made its move over to Bali Lane.

10 New Cafes In Singapore July 2015 – Keong Siak, Bugis Gets More Happening

Luxe Sydney
Keong Saik Road #01-04, Singapore 089109
Opening Hours: 12pm – 12am (Tues-Fri), 9am – 12am (Sat), 9am – 4pm (Sun)

Sydney’s Luxe Brand has opened a café at Keong Siak Street, and I fell in love with the interior immediately. Luxe first started as a hole-in-the-wall at Bondi, and Singapore makes its first overseas outlet. Its Head-chef Chui Lee Luk is actually Singapore-born, and this makes a home-coming of sorts. With experience at Claude’s and with Kylie Kwong, Chef Chui promises modern Australian cuisine with a Southeast Asian twist. (Read: Luxe Sydney Keong Siak Road)

The Daily Roundup
1 Keong Saik Road #01-02 The Working Capitol Singapore 089109

Formerly tentatively known as The Working Capitol Café, this space has a fixed name and identity finally – a modern crêperie. The cafe with rather Aussie-vibes serve sweet crepes and savoury galettes (round flat crusty cakes). Popular spot with office executives for meet-ups.

Tuk Tuk Cha
3 Temasek Boulevard #02-605A Suntec City, Singapore 038983
Opening Hours: 9am – 9pm Daily

Thai café specialising in Thai coffee and tea. Opened by the people behind Bedok Point’s Thai Boat Noodle.

Richmond Station
17 Bali Lane, Singapore 189853 (Bugis MRT)

Fancy a cup of tea and some scones, my dear? How about some homemade cakes with desiccated coconut? Oh, I see, a British inspired café. How nice. Menu includes Norwegian Salmon with Pesto Sauce ($25.90) and Beef Burger with Mushroom ($15.90).

Le Kue
20 Haji Lane Singapore 189212 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 12am

Quaint tart and pastries shop. Le Kue offers interesting French bakes with some localised flavours. Hope they do well.

OMB Oh My Bacon
7 Dunlop Street, Singapore 209337 (5-10 min walk from Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tue-Fri), 10am – 10pm (Sat-Sun), Closed Mon

Bacon starters, bacon mains, bacon desserts, bacon ice cream… You get the drift. (Read: OMG Oh My Bacon Dunlop Street)

Pizza Face
302 Beach Road Concourse Skyline #01-03 Singapore 199600
Opening Hours: 8am – 10:30pm Daily

If you cannot find the shop, it’s opposite Pizza Hut. I am sure this is a pure coincidence. Pizza Face serves thin-crust pizza, pasta and cakes from Les Patisseries.

The Delight’s Heaven
470 North Bridge Road Bugis Cube #05-09 Singapore 188735
Opening Hours: 12pm – 8pm (Mon), 11am – 8pm (Tues-Sat), 1pm – 7pm (Sun), Closed PH

A blink and you may miss shop at Bugis Cube. There is only one table there, so bakes are mainly for take-away. Owner Chef Joey Ling graduated from Le Cordon Bleu Australia, and spent 2 years working as a part time pastry chef at Sydney’s 360 Bar and Dining restaurant.

Double Scoops
Block 226A Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 #01-627, Singapore 561226 (15-20 min walk from Ang Mo Kio MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon-Thu), 11am – 10.30pm (Fri), 10.30am – 10.30pm (Sat), 10.30am – 10pm (Sun)

An ice cream cafe at Ang Mo Kio. Recommended flavors include Orh Nee (aka Yam), Thai Milk Tea and Kopiko (aka coffee). Ice cream is priced at $3.20 for single, $5.60 for double and $7.90 for triple scoops, additional $0.50 for premium flavors, $1 for waffle cone or bowls and $3.60 for waffle or brownie. Ice cream – okay; waffles – not so yet. (Read: Double Scoops Ang Mo Kio)

Doi Chaang Coffee
321 Clementi Ave 3 #01-02 Singapore 129905

Franchise of one of Vietnam’s top coffee chain. Coffee is quite strong and intense. Other than the signature crepe cakes, this outlet offer some home-made bakes such as tiramisu and Oreo truffle chocolate.

10 New & Hot Restaurants Singapore July 2015

The main buzz on new openings in Singapore fell on Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen. Reviews have not be most favourable, but people will still pack the place. I say we don’t really care about reviews, do we? (Oh, the irony.)

10 New & Hot Restaurants Singapore July 2015

Bread Street Kitchen
Marina Bay Sands Bay Level L1-81, 2 Bayfront Avenue, The Shoppes, Singapore S018972
Tel: +65 6688 5665
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 5:30pm (Lunch), 5:30pm – 10pm (Sun-Wed), 5:30pm – 12am (Dinner),
11:30am – 1am (Sun), 11:30am – 2am (Fri-Sat)

Bread Street Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay has arrived at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, amidst much anticipation. The Singapore BSK is helmed by Executive Chef Sabrina Stillhart, who previously worked with him at London’s BSK and the one Michelin starred Savoy Grill. Reviews have been mixed, with Straits Times’ Wong Ah Yoke giving a “pedestrian” 2.5 star rating. Ouch! (Read: Bread Street Kitchen)

Twins Korean Restaurant
7 Craig Road Singapore 089667
Tel: +65 6221 5205
Opening Hours: 11am – 3:00pm, 5:00pm – 12am (Mon-Sat), 5pm – 12am (Sun)

Twins Korean Restaurant opened by a good-looking pair of Korean twin chefs looks set to fill some bellies and melt some hearts. I liked the Soy and Garlic Chicken Wings ($15 for 10 pieces) best. Small-bite sized wings which were juicy and well-marinated on the inside, slightly crispy, enveloped with an addictive sweetish honey sauce. Daebak!

The Sushi Bar Ngee Ann City
391 Orchard Road #05-34/35 Ngee Ann City Singapore 238873 (Orchard MRT)
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 9pm

Popular Japanese outlet The Sushi Bar from Far East Plaza opens a fuller-fledged restaurant at Ngee Ann City. The Far East Plaza units had a no-frills ‘indie’ appeal, while this Sushi Bar is likely to have a big group (5-8 pax), after-work gathering and family dinner draw. There are some new dishes, the recommended ones being Aburi Kaisen Chirashi Don ($26.90), Waygu Don ($34.90), Tempura Moriwase ($24.90) and Dragon Roll ($25.90)

Rollie Olie
The Star Vista, 1 Vista Exchange Green, #02-05, Singapore 138617 (Buona Vista MRT)
Tel: +65 63165710
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon-Sat), 11:30am – 10pm

Rollie Olie at The Star Vista sells more than 10 different types of rolls, including 9 signature rolls, ‘sushirritos’ and skinny rolls which are rice-less and rolled in soy paper. The signature rolls had international flavours incorporated such as K Kop ($12.95) filled with spicy crab meat and kimchi, Bollywood ($14.95) with curry prawn and avocado. A set meal which comes with 4 pieces (cannot choose from all though), soup and salad is at $12.95. Promising sushi rolls, but rather off the radar.

Gyoza Bar
7A North Canal Road, Singapore 048820 (Raffles Place MRT)
Opening Hours: 7pm – 11pm (Mon – Sat)

The upper level of Ramen Matsuri at Boat Quay contains the little-known Gyoza Bar, reminding us that some of the best foods in Japan are found at obscure spots. The menu was simple – Assortment of Appetizers ($8), Gyoza ($8-$12), Entrees of Porcini Mushrooms Dumplings ($10), Fried Chicken ($12), Tamago Kake Gohan ($12), and Ramen ($12 for half, $18 for full bowl). All could be paired with sparkling wine by the glass or wine by the bottle.

Takeda Shouten Sake Bar
Orchid Hotel #01-08, 1 Tras Link Singapore 078867
Tel: +65 6444 0880
Opening Hours: 1pm – 12am

Another Japanese restaurant by ‘Ramen King’ Chef Keisuke Takeda at Orchid Hotel. Takeda Shouten serves an assortment of bar bites, oden, cold dishes, sashimi, gyoza (from few doors away), grilled dishes, and small rice dishes.

Xin Hao Ramen
470 North Bridge Road #03-19 Bugis Cube, Singapore 188735 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 9pm (Mon-Sat), Closed Sun

Xin Hao at Bugis Cube sells the atypical ramen – no chashu, no bamboo shoots, not the usual kind of noodles. Xin Hao’s Miso Ramen ($11.00) is accompanied with grilled meat, hanjuku egg, deep fried enoki mushroom and bonito flakes. The grilled meat is the best part, tender with marinate that reminds me of a Chinese-style pork chop.

Alibabar Dining Café Bar
Alexandra Central Mall, #01-15, 321 Alexandra Road Singapore 159971

Alibabar opens at Alexandra Central Mall. This name is a familiar one for the East Coast and Katong residents, the corner ‘hawker-bar’ coffeeshop which has been attracting many diners for its range of drinks, affordable bites and chill-out atmosphere. Its menu contains a higher percentage of Western grubs such as Burgers ($12.70 – $15.90), Bratwurst ($12.20), Roasted Pork Knuckle ($16.80 for half, $29.80 for whole), Duck Confit ($16.40) to some familiar hawker fare such as Chicken Curry ($9.90 for lunch), and Satay Delight ($9 for 10 sticks).

Palette
13 Stamford Road Capitol Piazza NEUE #B1-20/27 Singapore 178905 (City Hall MRT)
Tel: +65 6384 3359
Opening Hours: 10:30am – 10:30pm Daily

Another food court concept by the BreadTalk Group. You would like to think of this as Food Republic 2.0. Some of the stalls there include Ah Koong Restaurant, 28-year-old noodle joint from Johor Bahru famous for its handmade fishballs, Hok Kee, Balestier Bak Kut Teh, Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant, Yong Xin Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles, IndoChili and 90 Gastro Bar. Prices are not cheap though.

Equilibrium Modern Italian Bacaro & Ristorante
01-86 Galleria, Capitol Piazza 15 Stamford Road, Singapore 178906

Set up by the team behind Supply & Demand, there is a certain standard especially in terms of aesthetics and plating. Their dessert menu is fairly interesting, and be expected to try out some novel items such as a Panna Cotta Nascosto ($14) – homemade almond milk panna cotta with blood orange granite.

20 New Cafes In Bugis – Around Hipster, Colourful Arab Street and North Bridge Road

$

Do you know that Bugis MRT station was first known as Victoria? We are glad the station changed its name, giving prominence to the historical significance and vibrant cultures of this area.

Bugis, named after migrants from Sulawesi Indonesia, had a colourful past known for street foods, drinking areas, and women (that is why it was also called ‘Boogie Street’). It is now the must-go to place for shopping, food, and can I add… cafes?

In less than a year, we have seen more than 20 cafes sprouting out at the surrounding spots at Bali Lane, Kampong Glam, Haji Lane, North Bridge Road, Beach Road and Waterloo.

Halal cafes are also gaining prominence. We like them for their creative takes of food – Western with a twist of local flavours. Think pasta with hot chili padi, and crème brulee with cempedak.

20 New Cafes In Bugis – Around Hipster, Colourful Arab Street and North Bridge Road

All In
660 North Bridge Road Singapore 188797 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 7am – 11pm

First there was I Am, then And Why, now All In. This area is almost theirs! Taking over the corner designer clothing shop, All In is more of a takeaway counter for coffee, cold brew (I like), juices, some pastries and ice cream. Their rainbow ice cream ($3.90) may be the next Instagram hit. Good news for early wakers, All In is opened early enough at 7am for your caffeine fix.

And Why
31 Bali Lane Singapore 189867 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 9:30am – 9pm (Mon-Tues), 9:30am – 9pm (Thurs-Sun)

Also opened by the team behind the popular I AM Café, And Why is a Halal café set for a New-Yorkish theme. We liked the décor, and service staff dressed smartly for Broadway. The cakes are fab, but food not too bad, and hope there will be more varieties that can represent NYC.

Afterwit
778 North Bridge Road Singapore 198746
Opening Hours: 9am – 9pm

This café is by the team behind Working Title. Beverages menu come in a Periodic Table. Chemistry folks should take time to study this. The café sells coffee, smoothies, brunch and desserts, and uses Halal ingredients.

Baker & Cook
InterContinental Singapore, 80 Middle Road Singapore 188966
Opening Hours: 8am – 7pm

“Global Baker” Dean Brettschneider has found some success in Singapore, opening up store after store. We liked some of the pastries and cakes – the Carrot Cake, Lamingtons and Pecan Tarts were yummy. Service staff is friendly. However, the café is smaller than its other branches, seats can be cramped and it does get hot (I mean sweating hot) people-watching by the counter seats.

Cake Love
27 Bali Lane, Singapore 189863

2-storey Halal cafe which moved to Bali Lane, known for its various sweet treats such as Cookies & Cream Milkshake. Red Velvet Waffles with Ice Cream, Love Struck, Chocolate Bomb, and Red Velvet S’mores Stack.

Coffee Cart
465 Crawford Lane #01-08, Singapore 190465 (nearer Lavender Station)
Opening Hours: 9am – 9pm

There is a physical cart within the store, thus the name. Coffee beans from Dutch Colony.

Hyde and Co.
785 North Bridge Road Singapore 198753
Opening Hours: 11am – 6pm (Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri), 10am – 6pm (Sat-Sun), Closed Tues

You would realise Hyde and Co. is rather different from all the other cafes. Oh, it is very English. A line on its wall say “You can’t buy happiness but you can buy tea, and that’s kind of the same thing.” This European inspired café has an extensive tea menu of 45 tea selections. They have tweaked their menu recently to offer more brunch items, and their photogenic Butterscotch Popcorn Waffles ($14) is going places – the tummies. (Read: Hyde & Co. North Bridge Road)

Krave Cafe
28 Bali Lane Singapore 189864 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10pm (Tues-Thurs, Sun), 11:30am – 11pm (Fri-Sat), Last orders 9:30pm and 10:30pm

The chef in charge of Krave is Chef Sufiyan Safee, with a resume of being Suria’s cookshow host and previously helming Jimmy Monkey’s kitchen. Some interesting East-meets-West dishes to try, one of which is the Arabiatta Chicken Pasta ($10.00) which our entire table praised for its tomato marina sauce with that chilli padi kick. (Read: Krave Cafe Bali Lane)

Le Kue
20 Haji Lane Singapore 189212 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 12am

Asian inspired French patisseries. Expect Pandan Creme Brulee, Gula Melaka Creme Brulee (which came in an unusual longish tray), La Tropique made up of caramel creme, passionfruit and gula melaka. We liked some of the tarts, though wished that the base could be less crumbly.

OMB
7 Dunlop Street Singapore 209337
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tues-Fri), 10am – 10pm (Sat-Sun)

Oh My Bacon! That is right. A bacon inspired café. If in your wildest dream, you thought about Bacon Ice Cream on Waffles ($14), let it come true here. If not, a Bacon Brownie ($9)? (Read: OMG Oh My Bacon Dunlop Street)

Pizza Face
302 Beach Road Concourse Skyline #01-03 Singapore 199600
Opening Hours: 8am – 10:30pm Daily

If you cannot find it, it is right opposite Pizza Hut. (We are sure it is a coincidence). The menu items contain the usual diet of salads, starters, pasta, Italian-inspired thin-crusted pizza. You can’t run away from those, and yes, cakes from Les Patisseries. (Read: Pizza Face Beach Road)

Richmond Station
17 Bali Lane, Singapore 189853 (Bugis MRT)

A cup of tea and some crumpets, my dear? How about some freshly baked scones with home-made jam and Devonshire cream? A British-inspired café with pastries made in-house and wholesome food. There are the 3 Burger Combo ($24), Norwegian Salmon with Pesto Sauce ($25.90) and Zesty Crab Angel Hair Pasta ($18.90). Wait! Where’s the Fish N Chips? (Read: Richmond Station Bali Lane)

Selfie Coffee Singapore
11 Haji Lane Singapore 189204 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon-Thurs, Sun), 11am – 11pm (Fri-Sat)

If you are feeling kind of narcissistic, admire your selfie for a while, then drink it down. This is Singapore’s 1st selfie café, after it got trendy in Taipei and Malaysia. Selfies are printed on edible foam on drinks. You either love it or find drinking your face disturbing. (Read: Selfie Coffee Haji Lane)

The Betterfield
261 Waterloo Street #01-23 Singapore 180261 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 3pm, 6pm – 10pm (Mon-Fri); 11am – 10pm (Sat); 11am – 8pm (Sun)

No GST and service charge.

The Delights Heaven
470 North Bridge Road Bugis Cube #05-09 Singapore 188735 (Bugis MRT)

The number of new restaurants in Singapore has reached quite astonishing numbers, that it won’t be exaggerating to say there are opening every single day on average. (Read: 10 New Cafes In Singapore Aug 2015)

Japanese, Mod-Sin, Noodle Houses and Thai restaurants take centrestage this month, as more openings are happening at Singapore’s Central Business District, Suntec City and town area. Saturated, or room for more?

10 New & Hot Restaurants Singapore August 2015

Cha Thai
80 Telok Ayer Street Singapore 048466 (Telok Ayer MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm Daily, Last Order 9:30pm.
Express Takeaway Lane Opens 8am – 6pm

While this is a new-to-market restaurant, the Cha Thai team has already established a name with Loaves Me at SMU, being one of the first cafes in Singapore to offer Shibuya brick toast. Prices are higher than the usual casual Thai restaurants, but the quality is there.

Try the Tiger Prawn Panang Curry ($28). The gravy is luscious thick with coconut cream, only mildly spicy, and you would find an interesting addition – lychees. The Panang Curry generally has a sweet side to balance the spiciness. Chef uses lychees instead of just sugar for its natural sweetness and touch of juiciness. (Read: Cha Thai Telok Ayer)

Open Farm Community
130E Minden Road Singapore 248819
Opening Hours: 12pm – 3pm, 6pm – 10pm (Mon-Fri), 11am – 10pm (Sat-Sun), Last orders 30 min before closing
Tel: +65 6471 0306
Reserve Online Now

The Open Farm Community, who looks set to be one of the defining new openings in Singapore this year, is a collaboration between the Spa Esprit Group, Chef Ryan Clift of Tippling Club and urban food garden specialists Edible Gardens.

This concept at Dempsey Hill, sprawling over 35,000 square feet of an urban farmland and 60-seater restaurant space is a bold, is a refreshing move in land-scarce Singapore. A restaurant in the middle is surrounded by a beautiful architectural garden, where children can explore the fruit orchards, while busy executives can also do takeaways at a café at the front. Don’t be surprised if some of the ingredients in your food is just plucked from the garden. (Read: Open Farm Community Minden Road)

CreatureS
120 Desker Road Singapore 209639
Tel: +65 6291 6996
Opening Hours: 10:30am – 10:30pm (Mon, Wed, Thurs), 10:30am – 11:30pm (Fri), 9:30am – 11:30pm (Sat-Sun), Closed Tues

CreatureS has an extensive menu which blends Western culinary dishes with Asian and local flavours. Plus it is set at the used-to-be-more-dodgy Desker Road which gives it a dash of hipness and mystery.

Some of its offerings: Zhu Burger ($22), Chap Chye Fusilli ($18), Prawn and Pork Buah Keluak On Prata ($15), 5-Spice Pork and Rice Broth ($23), Italian Yong Tau Fu ($10) and Orh Nee Cake ($9), this is one menu that will make jaded customers sit up and take notice. Many dishes are tilted towards home-style cooking, therefore could come across as ‘healthy’ or ‘could be more flavourful’ – depending on how you see it. (Read: CreatureS Desker Road)

Ginza Kuroson
Ngee Ann City, 391 Orchard Rd #03-10 s238873 (Orchard MRT)
Tel: +65 6235 3785
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 2pm, 6pm – 10pm

With a combination of fresh seafood, classy ambience, personable professional service and a comfortable price point, Ginza Kuroson is one of my favourite Japanese restaurant openings this year. I hope it stays this way.

Ginza Kuroson at Ngee Ann City boosts of a long sushi bar and robatayaki counter, display of fresh fish and seafood, an element black and red themed décor, with Japanese chefs skilling working their crafts behind the counter. For lunch, Donburi sets are available, at a more affordable pricing than dinner. (Read: Ginza Kuroson Ngee Ann City)

ZAKU is helmed by American Chef Dan Segall who has an impressive resume – Zuma in Hog Kong, M1NT in Shanghai, and the former KU DE TA at MBS. The Japanese restaurant with a European touch offers skewers, salads, mains, vegetables, and hotpot rice, along with a number of premium and exclusive sake labels. (Read: ZAKU Capitol Piazza)

The tempura donburi shop opened by the Keisuke Ramen team. Two types of Japanese Tendon are available– Special Tendon (Tempura Rice Bowl, $13.90) and Vegetable Tendon (Vegetable Tempura Rice Bowl, $12.90), which is considered value-for-money for the type of ingredients used. 2 tempura prawns resting on top of a mixture of deep fried vegetables of melon and lady’s finger, slices of chicken breast meat and tempura egg over a bed of rice, covered in light soy dressing, all in an elegant Arita porcelain bowl. (Read: Takeda Shouten Tanjong Pagar)

Liang Court #02-32/33 177 River Valley Road Singapore 179030

The Butadon was a bowl of deliciousness – 850℃ grilled USDA pork, Yumepirica ‘beautiful dream’ rice which is slightly more sweet and sticky than the typical Japanese rice, and a secret recipe Tare sauce imported from Hokkaido. (Read: Butahage Liang Court)

Otoko Ramen’s shoyu plus tonkotsu soup base with toppings of cabbage reminds me of JIRO Ramen in Japan. May not appeal to all, but should reach out to a specific group of diners. (Read: Otoko Ramen Alexandra Central Mall)

Mak’s Noodle
No. 176 Orchard Road #01-63/64 The Centrepoint Singapore 238843
Tel: +65 6235 5778
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm

The famous Hong Kong Mak’s Noodle has opened in Singapore at Centrepoint. The menu is clearly divided into sections – tossed noodle, soup dishes, side dishes and beverages. Prices are slightly higher than Hong Kong’s, but this is inevitable.
A Wonton Noodle Soup is priced $6.90 here, while in Hong Kong a bowl would be about HK$36 (SGD$6.30). Some say not as good as Hong Kong’s, while there are others think that beats a plane-ride over. (Read: Mak’s Noodle Centrepoint)

Noodles and chilli sauce were memorable, while there were divided views on the overall taste. Long queues during peak hours. (Read: Wanton Seng’s Noodle Bar Amoy Street)

25 New Cafes In Singapore September 2015 – The Hottest Cafe Guide!

$

What a year. I remember doing this New Cafes for September 2014 – Enough To Keep You Awake Till September Ends listing, and a year has past. For the record, about 10-30 new cafes are opening up every single month in Singapore ever since.

For these 2 months alone, we can be seeing at least 30-40 new ones, restaurants excluded. DC Comics Super Heroes Café, Café & Meal MUJI, Arteastiq, In Good Company Café, Jewel Coffee, Bynd Artisan Atelier, The Dwelling Place, Hoshino Coffee, Churn Creamery, Nunsongyee, Kokomama Marketplace, Seafood Pike Chowder, Giovanni L, Hashida Garo, Qoolco, Karafuru, Windowsill Pies, The Bakehouse, Supermilk, Bakersfield, Brother Bird, and Nigiro Café are those featured here.

The general trend is moving towards ice cream cafes. And Korean bingsu shops are showing signs of slowing down.

No wonder people have been saying I have put on weight. There are just too many new restaurants and cafes to try in Singapore.

Other than 20 New Cafes in Singapore this September 2015, you can also expect a flood of new restaurants. On a rough estimate, there are about 40-50 of them which have opened their doors the last two months or so.

Some are re-openings, such as No 20 on this list (which should keep many quite happy).

The menu is not defined by one particular style, with various highlights (especially the grilled meats and desserts) such as the Rare Yellow Fin tuna Tataki, Pan-Fried Duck Foie Gras, Seared Lamb Loin, Seafood Platter of Oysters, Crab Legs, Live Prawns and Boston Lobster; and Banoffee with Toffee & Banana. (Read: Pool Grill Marriott)

3-star Michelin chef Juan Amador brings Spanish–European dishes combined with Asian influences to Singapore at Goodwood Park. We weren’t overwhelmed with the set meal, but the Foie Gras Ice Cream ($18) was impressive.
