Time to wake up when September ends. The year is flying past, with more than 200 new cafes that has opened up in Singapore. Still a shocker.

The more exciting openings include Clinton St Baking Company & Restaurant Purvis St where some of my friends say the taste is very similar to NYC’s, and MOS Cafe which is Singapore’s very first.

With the end of the year approaching, there is usually a mad rush to open food businesses to capture the Christmas crowd. We shall see if we will hit 250.

Recommended items include the Eggs Benedict served over toasted buttermilk biscuit ($20), Southern Breakfast comprised of two eggs any style ($18), Buttermilk Biscuit Sandwich ($13.50) Brioche French Toast ($18), Seafood Po’ Boy ($21) and Salmon Burger.

Our favourite item was the Clinton St’s famed fluffy Pancakes with warm maple butter ($18), being voted ‘Best In the City’ twice by New York Magazine. (Read: Clinton St Baking Company & Restaurant Purvis St)

Quick tip for new cafe owners: Do include some basic information such as description of cafe, updated opening hours, menu, telephone number, an email and some photos. We have gotten used to standing outside closed shops while scrolling on Facebook, “It says open leh.”

Some of the prominent places to look out for include the new National Gallery Singapore which will house Aura Restaurant and Sky Lounge by ilLido Group, National Kitchen by Violet Oon, Odette by The Lo & Behold Group, SAHA and The Altimate by The Padang FNB, and Yàn and Smoke & Mirrors by Park Hotel Group.

The revamp of Marina Square will include more F&B choices, and we have seen Japanese concepts Emporium Shokuhin and Tenkaichi setting foot there.

Prominent brands from Hong Kong The Butchers Club Burger has opened at Clarke Quay; and Mak’s Noodle its second outlet at Westgate.

So. Many. Food. Choices.

Tel: +65 6384 9087
Opening Hours: 12pm – 12am

Ryu’s Japanese Restaurant is rather off-the-radar, located at the corner unit of Capitol Piazza. It has a small but strong team, led by Head Chef Yasuo Niizuma, and ‘Kantsukeshi’ (sake master) Hiroyasu Sakurma. The tempura chef used to work at Tokyo’s famed Edo style tempura restaurant Tempura Yamanoue Roppongi, whose culinary skill is shown in a deceptively simple but tasty bowl of Tendon ($25). Look out for Ryu’s Bara Chirashi Sushi Set ($45) is served in a traditional 3-drawer wooden ‘Okamochi’ box, which is hardly seen around here. (Read: Ryu’s Japanese Restaurant Capitol Piazza)

Chef Hide Yamamoto opens his second Japanese restaurant in Singapore at The Quayside Robertson Quay, specialising in traditional Kappo cuisine. ‘Kappo’ would mean an intimate over-the-counter experience, where the chef would prepare dishes in front of the customers, served directly across the counter to the diner. The menu at Wagokoro is served in 8- or 9-course sets. Omakase lunch is at $80++, while Dinner is priced at $158++ and $238++. (Read: Wagokoro Hide Yamamoto Robertson Quay)

Fu Lin Bar
127 Telok Ayer Street Singapore 068596 (Tanjong Pagar, Telok Ayer MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am to 3pm (Mon – Sat), Tapas Bar Opens After 3pm

Fu Lin Yong Tofu gets a revamp and goes ‘hipster’, selling Asian Fusion Tapas after 3pm along with house wines, sake and beer. Located at Telok Ayer Street near Amoy Food Centre, Fu Lin appears like any other generic bar with an industrial concrete look matched with high tables and seats. Their Yong Tau Foo style is a class of their own – a dry version where the items are covered in gooey brown minced chicken gravy made from a secret recipe. The ‘signature noodles’ turned out to be thick bee hoon in a starchy sauce similar to beef noodles. (Read: Fu Lin Bar Telok Ayer)

Putien Ion Orchard

Tel: +65 6509 4296

The Putien Group has opened this swanking modern Chinese restaurant located at Level 4 of Ion Orchard. Other than the usual Heng Hwa favourites, look out for the dish unique to Ion’s Putien – Fried Heng Hwa Bee Hoon with Soy Milk 豆浆米粉, where the sun-dried beehoon is simmered together with eggs and fresh grinded soy milk.
What you get is a wetter-than-usual style, the taste of the soy milk being very subtle and lingering towards the end of every bite. (Read: Putien Ion Orchard)

Loylum
45 Sam Leong Road Singapore 207935 (near Kitchener Road, 5-10 min walk from Farrer Park MRT, City Square Mall, Mustafa Centre)
Tel +65 6291 3001
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm Daily

Loylum which means “”floating”, hails from Thailand itself and is founded since 1952. Small and standard sized bowls are available, priced at $2 and $5. There are four different soup bases of beef, chicken pork and vegetarian mushroom, matched with your choice of bee hoon, egg noodle, thick or thin kway teow. I liked the pork soup base, follow by the beef best. Both were robust, packed with flavours, oily (yes) with a trace of herbal nuance. (Read: Loylum Sam Leong Road)

Oppa Chicken Singapore
274 South Bridge Road (5 min walk from Chinatown MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 4pm, 5pm – 10pm (Mon-Sat), Closed Sun

Another Korean fried chicken shop. The chicken comes in 3 sizing portions: Small (3 pieces, $12,90), Medium (5 pieces, $20.90), Large (9 pieces, $36.90). Cost reflects the original chicken flavour, and flavoured ones are $1-$2 more. Our favourite was the Honey Garlic Flavoured Chicken with finely chopped garlic drizzled with honey sauce over the fried chicken. Sweet, intense, flavourful and not over garlicky. (Read: Oppa Chicken South Bridge Road)

Alt Pizza
117 East Coast Road (across from I12 Katong). Singapore 428805
Tel: +65 6247 7360
Opening Hours: 5pm – 11pm

Alt. which has a branch at Suntec City, has opened its second at East Coast. This is a contemporary pizza bar with fun signature pizza flavours and Design-It-Yourself option. Try the ‘Hangover’ ($17), made with organic tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, fennel sausage, roasted onions and parmesan, or Truffle Shuffle ($17), topped with white sauce, parmesan, mozzarella, white truffle oil, roasted mushrooms and onions.

The Butchers Club Burger
3A River Valley Road, #01-01B Clarke Quay, Singapore 179020
Opening Hours: 12pm – 12am (Sun – Tues), 12pm – 2am (Wed – Thurs), 12pm – 4am (Fri – Sat)

The Butchers Club Burger, considered as one of the best burger joints in Hong Kong, has opened its first in Singapore at Clarke Quay.

Their signature bacon cheeseburgers are made using these Black Angus dry-aged beef – minced fresh-to-order, passed to the kitchen, where the patties will be grilled to a medium.

The basic Burger ($20) I had was an unassuming-good one. Under its pillow-soft buns lie a juicy 160-gram dry-aged Black Angus grain-fed beef patty cooked in a suitably-pinkish perfect medium. Prices are generally steeper than Hong Kong’s though. (Read: The Butchers Club Burger Clarke Quay)

Marrybrown Singapore
iFly Singapore, 43, Sentosa Siloso Beach Walk 01-03, Singapore 099010

We hear of Singaporeans going up north for a taste of Marrybrown. Well, that popular Halal fastfood chain that originated from Malaysia is here in Singapore, way south at Sentosa’s iFly.

The menu features a variety of treats including Crispy Chicken, Burgers, Nasi Marrybrown, Mi Kari, Fish N Chips, and Chicken Porridge. We can recommend the Chick-A-Licious ($7.50, $9.90 for set with drink) contained 2 pieces of original recipe chicken, drenched in black pepper sauce which might set some tongues on fire. Skip the cold burger. (Read: Marrybrown Sentosa iFly)

Sixty6
1A Short Street, #01-03, Singapore 188210
Opening Hours: 12pm – 3pm, 5pm – 10pm (Mon-Sun)

Sixty6 is an under-the-radar Thai restaurant at Selegie, offering dishes such Thai Fish Cakes ($10 for 5 pieces), Som Tam ($8), Yam Woon Sen ($10), Tom Yam Seafood Soup ($15), Green Curry ($14), Panang Curry ($14), Tom Yam Fried Rice ($6), Green Curry Fried Rice ($6), Pad Krapow Special ($16) and Tom Yam Noodle Soup ($6).

Prices are friendly, portions are good, and taste not too bad. No GST and service charge. (Read: Sixty6 Short Street)

Som Tam
181 Orchard Road, Orchard Central #08-13 Singapore 238896 (Somerset MRT)
Tel: +65 6238 6872
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 3:30pm, 5:30pm to 10pm (Mon-Thurs), 11:30am to 10pm (Fri-Sun)

The team from Gin Khao at East Coast Parkway set up a Thai modern fusion restaurant at Level 8 of Orchard Central.

A quick flip of its menu would reveal varied offering, some seemed catering to a younger customer base – Deep Fried Wings with Tom Yum Seasoning ($9.80), Not So Complicated Noodles ($9.80, said to be a less messy version of the popular Bangkok dish), Salmon Tataki ($11.80), Tiger Tear Salad ($10.80, ribeye in green and hot sauce), Tom Yum Koong Burger ($13.80), and Som Tam Style Carbonara Pasta ($13.80). Some hits and misses. (Read: Som Tam Orchard)

Mak’s Noodle Westgate
3 Gateway Drive #02-06 Westgate Shopping Mall, Singapore 608532 (Jurong East MRT)

Compared to the original branch at Centrepoint, Westgate’s branch has a larger seating capacity and expanded menu.

Some additions include Congee ($3.50-$12), Tossed Noodle with Prawns and Dried Shrimp Roe ($16.20), Boiled Pork Liver ($14.70) and Boiled Beef Slices ($14.70). We liked the congee which had the right consistency – silky, smooth, thick and creamy. Plus it was matched with an agreeable flavour, neither too plain nor salty. (Read: Mak’s Noodle Westgate)

KINS Restaurant
2 Jalan Klapa, Singapore 199314 (Between Bugis and Lavender MRT stations)
Tel: +65 62914842
Opening Hours: 11:#0am – 10:30pm (Mon – Fri), 11am – 11pm (Sat – Sun)

“KINS is a place for Everyone.” Set up by 3 brothers Desmond, Louis and Leslie, the restaurant represents ‘kinship’ and is catered towards family get-togethers, and is kids-friendly.

Located at Jalan Klapa (North Bridge Road), some of their house-specialities include KINS Soy Glazed Salmon – pan fried salmon with roasted potato wedges, stir fried Chinese cabbage and special soya glazed, Tataki Tuna and Beef Carpaccio, and Apple Tortilla Tower.

Maggie Joan’s
110 Amoy Street #01-01, Singapore 069930 (entrance from Gemmil Lane)
Tel: +65 62215564
Opening Hours: 12pm – 2:30pm, 6pm – 11pm (Mon-Fri), 6pm – 11pm (Sat)

We thought we should let you know how to find this place first. It is located in the alleyways behind Amoy Street, but enter from Gemmill Lane (Club Street Social, walk to the end). Entrance is via an iron door cut into a whitewashed wall of an old shophouse space. All is blank except for a 2-D cutout spelling “Maggie Joan’s’. Don’t get lost.

When you enter, you will be wowed by the industrial chic décor like an underground bunker. Go for its Mediterranean fare such as Grilled Iberico Pork Jowl, prunes and cauliflower ($34).

Merdandy Bar & Cafe
67 Chula Street Singapore 049515 (next to OCBC Centre)
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Mon-Sat)

We did worry about the opening of Merdandy Café & Bar, because it is an alfresco-concept #Haze CBD workers who walk to OCBC Centre should know what it is.

If you need lunch, a set lunch comprising of a soup, main and drink is priced at $14.90. The mains include their signature Rendang Chicken, Crabmeat Pasta, Fish and Chips, Pork Chop, Mix Sausages or Garden Salad.

5th Quarter
39 Syed Alwi Road Singapore 207630
Tel: +65 6291 1936
Opening Hours: 12pm – 2.30pm Lunch, 6.30pm – 10.30pm (Last Order at 10pm), Closed Mon & PH

5th Quarter is a contemporary grill with a strong focus on meat curing, housed within the Vagabond Salon of the newly launched Hôtel Vagabond. For first time diners, the recommended dish is the Chef Selection of 5 Types of Charcuterie (S$18).

For mid-day diners, try the lunch menu which is a showcase of bi-weekly specials as well as highlights from the full menu, with the selection switching up every two weeks. The standard sharing dishes goes for S$10 per plate with a recommended six plates to share between two.

A-One Bak Kut Teh
The Star Vista, 1 Vista Exchange Green #01-46, Singapore 138617 (Buona Vista MRT)
Tel: +65 6734 6567
Opening Hours: 10:30am – 9:30am (last order)

Famous for their dried scallop porridge, the local restaurant chain A-One has further diversified into Bak Kut Teh business, offering Singapore’s 1st Claypot Bak Kut Teh Porridge.

Unfortunately, the Bak Kut Teh ($10.90) was overwhelming by pepper, and it is a pity diners cannot really savour the natural goodness from the pork bones. We hear that their other dishes such as the Ampang Yong Tau Foo is much better.

We will be frank to admit that this is the first month we are feeling both worried for and bored of the newer cafes.

November and December are the months we typically get a boost (or rush) of new openings to welcome the holiday season. This year we are particularly seeing a lot a lot more restaurants and bistros in the radar, compared to cafes.

Sometimes we get questions like “Should we sell so and so…” And if the item happen to be another Korean Bingsu, Over The Top Milkshakes, Fried Ice Cream Roll, we are more inclined to answer “No”.

Unless you have a recipe better than the last which opened.

It appears that trends are lasting shorter than previous years. The way to stand-out, is have both substance and originality. Good looks can only last that long (in an instagram world).

November will be a bumper month of new restaurant and cafe openings. We think the number will be no less than 30, as it is ‘traditionally’ so for F&B businesses to open before the year end to catch the festive crowd.

Competition is indeed stiff in Singapore. May the odds be ever in their favor, and flavours.

10 (+1) New & Hot Restaurants Singapore November 2015

Probably the month’s most anticipated restaurant opening for many food enthusiasts and critics. Chef Julien Royer is no stranger to the culinary scene, having brought JAAN to greater heights, most recently ranked Number 11 in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2015.

He has moved on for this collaboration with the Lo & Behold Group.

Housed in the new National Gallery Singapore, Odette is a fine dining restaurant inspired by Chef Royer’s grandmother Odette. Using classic French techniques, Chef will expand on his produce-driven cuisine to showcase the best seasonal ingredients from around the world in their purest form and flavour. For food, look out for Signature Chicken Wings ($14) and Crab Claws with Homemade Chili Dip ($18).

Spago By Wolfgang Puck
Sands SkyPark, Tower 2 Level 57 (Access from Hotel Lobby Tower 2)
Tel: +65 6688 9955
Opening Hours: 6pm – 10pm (until 11pm on Weekends)
5pm – 12am (cocktails and small plates at Terrace)

Frequent diners at Marina Bay Sands should be familiar with celebrity Chef Wolfgang Puck, whose steakhouse CUT enjoyed much positive reviews.

Spago, opened on Level 57 of MBS SkyPark featuring two concepts – a fine dining restaurant on one side; and a terrace lounge with al fresco bar. Its menu in Singapore is said to be “imaginative”, offering seasonal dishes of “Californian cuisine with global accents, in a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere”.

There appears to be strong Asian influences in the creation, such as Pan Seared Alaskan Halibut Laksa ($42), “Kaya Toast” with seared foie gras, pandan-coconut jam, slowed cooked egg yolk on toasted brioche ($33), Hokkaido Scallop Sashimi ($34), and Honey Miso Broiled Japanese Black Cod ($49). (Read: Spago by Wolfgang Puck Marina Bay Sands)

Masizzim Singapore
313 Somerset #B3-02 (next to Chir Chir) 313 Orchard Rd Singapore 238895 (Somerset MRT)
Tel: +65 6509 5808
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (last order 9:30pm), 11am – 11pm (last order 10:30pm)

Masizzim (pronounced ma-see-zim) is the combination of two Korean words – ‘masi’ which is short for ‘delicious’ and ‘jjim’ for stew. The hip casual restaurant is right next to popular Korean fried chicken shop Chir Chir, serving modern dishes at quite affordable rates friendly to the pocket.

The Korean stews are the highlights and can be customised with different meats, base and toppings. Of the three types of meat, we liked the pork best as the Australian mixed pork ribs were marinated overnight, slow-cooked in Masizzim’s secret sauce for at least six-hours, then served hot in cast-iron pots with flames, staying hot throughout the meal. (Masizzim Somerset 313)

Andong Zzimdak
Raffles City Shopping Centre B1-44F, 252 North Bridge Road Singapore 179103 (City Hall MRT)
Tel: +65 6533 3951
Opening Hours: 11.30 am – 10 pm Daily

The Korean fever in Singapore continues to heat up with the very first Andong Jjimdak restaurant at Raffles City. We may have seen this dish in Korean family restaurants locally, but this is probably the first eatery dedicated to this dish here.

Spicy in taste, huge in portion, and great for sharing, Andong Jjimdak is a seasoned and simmered chicken dish that originated in Gyeongsangbukdo, Andong. The menu is basic, with 4 varieties of Andong Jjimdak – The original ($40.90 for 2-3 pax, $50.90 for 3-4 pax), Boneless Jjimdak ($45.90, $55.90), Seafood Jjimdak ($48.90, $60.90), and Mayak Jjimdak ($42.90 and $52.90). (Read: Andong Zzimdak Raffles City)

Oven & Fried Chicken Bukit Timah
16 Chun Tin Road Singapore 599603 (opposite Beauty World)
Tel: +65 6463 3505
Opening Hours: Opening Hours: 11:30am – 2:30pm, 5:30pm – 12:00am (Mon-Fri), 5:30pm – 1:00am (Sat-Sun)

The Korean chicken bistro is made up of two separate brands: Okkudak and Ssal Dak.

Okkudak serves roasted chicken ($17 for half, $32 for half) which is first marinated then oven baked to retain its natural flavours; and sauced versions where the chicken is further stir-fried with spicy or Jambalaya sauces.

On the Ssal Dak side (which items we are more familiar with), the chicken is fried with 100% rice flour instead of wheat for a crispier texture. Thus, you will see ‘Fried Rice Chicken’ ($18 for half, $33 for whole) on the menu.

With rice flour used to coat the chicken before frying, there seems to be a thicker and dry-crispy outer layer. (Read: Oven & Fried Chicken Bt Timah)

Each set of a main with side comes with a free drink of your choice. Salted Egg or Orh Nee (yam) sauce were available at an additional $2 for the Shoe String Fries ($3). (Read: The Chicken King Toa Payoh)

Joyden Treasures
Opening Hours: 5 Stadium Walk #02-42, Leisure Park Kallang, Singapore 397693 (Stadium MRT)
Tel: +65 6446 8488
Hours: 11:30am – 3:00pm, 6:00pm – 10:00pm (Mon – Fri); 10:30am – 3:00pm, 5:30pm – 10:30pm (Sat, Sun, PH)

Ah, the taste of homely zi char style heritage dishes. Joyden Treasures at Leisure Park Kallang is the third eatery by Joyden Concept, featuring old school heritage dishes, and a few of the owners’ very own recipes.

Some of the recommended include Traditional Salt Baked Crab (Am so eyeing this), Crispy Fragrant Duck with Petite Lotus-Shaped Buns ($58), Jumbo Prawns in Traditional Dark Sauce ($25, $36, $52), Homemade Seafood Beancurd Rolls ($20, $26, $36), Double Boiled Seafood Soup in Whole Old Cucumber ($14), and Phoenix Beancurd Skin Prawn Roll ($16, $22, $30). (Read: Joyden Treasures Kallang)

Victor’s Kitchen
Chinatown Point B1-33, 133 New Bridge Road Singapore 059413 (Chinatown MRT)
Tel: +65 9838 2851
Opening Hours: 10:30am – 8pm

Victor’s Kitchen who claims that they serve the “Best Custard Buns in Singapore” has opened its 2nd branch at Chinatown Point glory.

Other than the Liu Sha Bao, the Victor’s King Prawn Dumplings ($5.20) were some of the more decent items we tried – succulent prawns, though the har gao skin could be thinner and more translucent. (Read: Victor’s Kitchen Chinatown Point)

Ramen & Tonkatsu Ma Maison
13 Stamford Road #B2-51 Capitol Piazza Singapore 178905 (City Hall MRT)
Tel: +65 6384 6211

This is Ma Maison’s first official foray to ramen in Singapore. The signature is the Ma Maison Original Creamy Cheese Ramen, where the handmade cheese is imported from a farm at Tokachi Hokkaido.

In its bowl of Shio, Shoyu or Miso Ramen ($16.80), a scoopful of cheese almost looking like grated parmesan was incorporated on the top of the soup base.

This added that twang of salty-gouda cheese, providing the broth a subtle but more-layered taste. If you are wondering, the original soup base is not exceedingly rich or thick in the first place, thus still manageable in terms of heaviness. (Read: Ramen & Tonkatsu Ma Maison Capitol Piazza)

10 New Cafes In Singapore December 2015

$

0

We reached the last month of the year, when cafes open, and cafes close.

Our guess is local customers is always on a lookout for something different, refreshing (and photogenic), and therefore those who stay in the game are cafes which re-invent themselves, have regular new offerings, and keep customers updated via social media and other means.

10 New Cafes In Singapore December 2015

Joe & The Juice
30 Raffles Place, Chevron House #01-35A Singapore 039803
Tel: +65 6221 2126
Opening Hours: 8am – 8pm (Mon – Fri), 8am – 3pm (Sat)

Copenhagen’s popular coffee and juice bar Joe & The Juice opens its first in Singapore, at Raffles Place Chevron House. (“Joe” means “coffee” in American slang)

The juices all come in attention-grabbing names such as Hangover Heaven, Iron Man, Hell Of A Name, and… Sex Me Up. I was told that the naming is not supposed to be gimmicky, but actually fulfils the functions it purports, as ingredients are mixed based to enhance the synergistic nature of vitamins and minerals. (Read Joe & The Juice Raffles Place)

Smoothie House Singapore
One Raffles Place #03-25 Singapore 048616 (next to Greendot)
Tel: +65 65321025
Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm (Mon-Sat), Closed Sun

Also within the CBD area, the super popular Smoothie House at Taipei’s Yong Kang Street 永康街思慕昔 has opened in Singapore at One Raffles Place! (next to modern vegetarian restaurant Greendot)

Try the Mango Snowflake Ice with Panna Cotta ($12.90) which is the signature and best-selling item. The flavoured blocks of ice that would be shaved are actually all imported directly from Taiwan, while the fruits come from various sources. Fluffy soft shaved layered ice, topped with a smooth panna cotta and fresh fruits. (Read: Smoothie House One Raffles Place)

Bottles & Bones
30 Raffles Place, Chervon House #01-42 Singapore 039803 (Raffles Place MRT)
Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm (Mon – Fri), 9am – 3pm (Sat)

Bottles & Bones takes on an open kitchen concept, where food will be fried, broiled, roasted and mix in front of you. This is owned by the group who brought in Lady M Singapore, so expect a selection of their cakes here, priced at $12 per slice.

The Populus Coffee & Food Co.
146 Neil Road Singapore 088875
Opening Hours: 9am – 7pm (Mon, Wed), 9am – 10:30pm (Thurs – Fri), 9:30am – 1030pm (Sat), 9:30am – 7pm (Sun), Closed Tues

This new café run by the team behind Department of Caffeine catapulted into our favourite café list. The interior design, the expensive coffee equipment, the attention to details, the good looking serving staff all in neatly-ironed slightly tight white long sleeved shirts… “Even the napkins are the expensive kind.”

Still in soft launch phase, the food is slightly uneven in terms of presentation and taste, but we are sure they will iron it out soon.

20F Specialty Coffeehouse
20 Foch Road, Singapore 209261 (Farrer Park MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 7pm (Mon), 10am – 10pm (Tue-Sun)

20F pays tribute to its address at 20 Foch Road, formerly a family-run clinic for 60 years.

We observed something interesting about its offerings – there are many sweet and savoury combinations in their food. The Recommended dishes for the brunch menu include the Orange Cinnamon French Toast ($15), and Duck & Waffle ($22), Pulled Duck or Pork Flatbread with Fresh Guac ($17) for the lunch menu.

20F appears to be one of the more promising recent café openings, and provides an alternative to the Chye Seng Huats and Tiramisu Heroes in the vicinity. (Read: 20F Speciality Coffeehouse Foch Road)

Caffebene Singapore
Vivocity, 1 Harbourfront Walk #02-150 Singapore 098585 (between TCC and Sushi Tei)
Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm (Mon-Sun)

Caffebene, voted the best coffee brand in Korea has opened its first Singapore outlet at Vivocity. Caffebene Singapore has a menu similar to that of Korea’s. However, there are tweaks to cater to the local palate.

The selection of food offered is also smaller, with Shaved Ice Bingsu ($13.90 – $20.90) , Waffle ($6.90 – $10.90), Honey Bread ($12.90 – $13.90), Coffee, Tea and Yogurt Smoothie ($6.30 – $7.80). (Read: Caffebene Singapore Vivocity)

Nunuiwangja 눈의 왕자
HillV2, 4 Hillview Rise, #01-08, Singapore 667979
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon-Sun), 10am – 10pm (Tue-Sun)

A bingsu café at HillV2. (Hooray to the new Downtown Line 2). The Classic Bingsus ($12.90) are the usual suspects: Injeolmi, Green Tea and a local rendition Milo flavoured bingsu. Safe options and not that exciting after all.

The Premium Bingsus ($14.90) sounded more interesting to us – Mango Cheese, Honey Grape and Tangerine, using tropical fruits which were uncommon in other bingsu cafes. We discovered something interesting in the midst… a popsicle within the bingsu! (Read: Nunuiwangja HillV2)

Café Print
27 Hamilton Road, Singapore 209196
Opening Hours: 11am – 11pm (Mon – Sat)

10 New & Best Cafes In Singapore To Visit In 2016 – Some Popular, Some Off The Radar

2016 will continue to be a year of specialty coffee houses, and some cafes experimenting (or copying) for more Instagrammable desserts In Singapore.

Here are some 10 New & Best Cafes In Singapore To Visit In 2016 – Some Popular, Some Off The Radar

Montana Singapore
PoMo 1 Selegie Road #02-25, Singapore 188306
Opening Hours: 8am – 9:30pm (Mon – Sun) Food from 10am onwards

Montana Singapore which describes itself as an “urban chic coffee brew bar” has recently expanded and moved upstairs to Level 2.

Its waffles are more exciting than ever. The revamped Montana Singapore menu merges traditional flavours with creative twists – including a Assam Crab Waffle ($18.00) inspired by Chef’s hometown food of Kedah Laksa, and a Black Velvet Waffles ($14.00) with a black sesame base that would remind many of wander-lusting in Japan.

However, they still faced some consistency issues in the waffles. For example, the chocolate coating on the ice cream went MIA, and music was a tad loud during the weekends for our liking.

A.R.C Coffee
29/31 Sultan Gate, Singapore 198477 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 9.30pm (Tue-Fri), 10.30am – 9.30pm (Sat-Sun), Closed Mon

A.R.C is a 3-in-1 Coffee Place with an Academy, Roastery and Café all in one place. Situated at Sultan Gate with a 3-storey high building, the 1st floor is a café concept with a cosy white bricked wall interior with a mini roastery site at the back.

The 2nd floor is used for as an academy for conducting classes, ranging from barista and latte art training to coffee appreciation workshops. Ms Andrea Tan, Champion of Singapore National Brewers Cup 2015, and her mentor Mr John Ryan Ting, Champion of Singapore National Barista Championships 2008, 2009, 2015, could be seen making coffee here. A.R.C Coffee (Sultan Gate)

Its popular items include Populus Scramble ($17) of soft creamy scrambled eggs, fresh herb melange, streaked bacon (too dry though) on a toasted croissant; and Buckwheat Pancakes with berry fruit compote and thyme infused maple syrup. Not all the food tried was fantastic though. More for the vibes.

The Coffee Academics Singapore
Level 2, Scotts Square, 6 Scotts Road, Singapore 228209 (Orchard MRT)
Opening Hours: 9am – 9pm Daily

The Coffee Academics in Singapore looks like a café meets science laboratory meets working space. No expenses spared in delivering an impressive interior.

The Singapore flagship store has been designed as a 7 Sensory Station experience – something that has not been previously done in their Hong Kong outlets, creating a “Sensory Playground” that showcases their unique offerings as a brand. In the works… you can even choose a customisable packaging for the Custom Blend Concierge, to create your own bespoke coffee blend and have the chance to roast it on-site. The Coffee Academics Singapore (Scotts Square)

The Plain Jane
Blk 211, Serangoon Ave 4, #01-10, Singapore 550211 (Serangoon MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm (Thu-Tue), Closed Wed

We also wanted to highlight somewhere in the heartlands. Located within the heartlands at Blk 211, Serangoon Ave 4, the interior has a homely feel which reminds me of my growing-up years with a rattan chair in the living room.

The menu offers an assortment of bakes such as the highly recommended Plain Jane Swiss Rolls ($4.90) and Not So Plain Jane Swiss Rolls ($5.90) with flavours on a rotational basis, light meals ($8.90 – $12.90), coffee and tea. The Swiss roll we had was light and moist, generously filled with matcha cream with non- overpowering and slight lingering matcha bitterness. The Plain Jane (Serangoon)

Joe & The Juice
30 Raffles Place, Chevron House #01-35A Singapore 039803
Tel: +65 6221 2126
Opening Hours: 8am – 8pm (Mon – Fri), 11am – 3pm (Sat)

For our CBD friends. The Joe & The Juice chain first originated from Copenhagen, founded by a former elite sports karate fighter who first wanted to design healthy delicious quick-fix meal options for athletes.

Joe & the Juice uses a unique blend of coffee beans, 100% organic, specially cultivated in South America. The one unique thing is, you can add ginger shots within – it adds an intriguing spiced, cooling ‘pop’ to the coffee. Don’t get confused with “Grey”, “Purple”, “Yellow” or “Pink” latte which cost between $5 – $6.50. They simply refer to the different cup sizes.

Oh, there is no extra charge if you want to up your caffeine intake with a double shot. Joe & The Juice (Raffles Place)

Ice Lab
Orchard Shopping Centre, 321 Orchard Road #01-01/02, Singapore 238866 (Somerset MRT)
Opening Hours: 1:30pm – 1am (Mon-Thu), 10am – 1am (Fri-Sun)

Ice Lab has opened with a Big Bang (pun unintended) specialising in Bingsu (more), churros (more more) and toast. It is opened by none other than Korean Comedian Shin Jung-Hwan – famous for his comic dance and silly acts. This marks his first venture overseas.

We were impressed with the 1.5 storeys high, 80 seating capacity, snow making machine that created falling snow in the middle of a round table, 6 bingsu making machines to make 6 different flavours of bingsu (each machine is a 5 figure sum) and a clean, white and spacious interior. Ice Lab (Somerset)

WANNA CUPPA
15 New Bridge Road, Singapore 059385 (Clarke Quay MRT, near Song Fa Bak Kut Teh)
Tel: +65 68162494
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 10:00pm (Mon-Thu), 8:30am – 12:00am (Fri), 10:00am – 12:00am (Sat), 10am – 6pm (Sun)

This café is very centralised, but quite off-the-radar, and we couldn’t let it slip past us. Inspired by the Art Deco 1920s designs, WANNA CUPPA décor is unique, with a welcoming environment for customers to relax in an atmosphere of a secret garden.

WANNA CUPPA’s signature items include Enoki Mushroom Fries ($7.90), Picasso Panini Grilled Chicken ($8.90), Mushroom Cream Truffle Linguine ($14.90), and Soft-shell Crab Pasta ($15.90).

Sarnies @ PasarBella Suntec
Suntec City, 3 Temasek Blvd, #01-455 to 461 North Wing, Singapore 038983
Opening Hours: 10.00am to 10.00pm (Mon – Sun)
Main outlet at 136 Telok Ayer Street, Singapore 068601

Started a few years ago by Aussie Ben Lee, Sarnies was a pumpin’ little café that is starting to reach out, opening up at PasarBella with a coffee and salad concept called Pimp My Salad.

Over at its main Telok Ayer branch, you can have a taste of Australian Cocowhip with vegan bio-fermented softserve. So cheem. In short, it’s dairy free, lactose free, fat free, gluten free. Coconut water based softserve with a refreshing and yet not icy punch. Choose from 6 toppings and 5 different syrups.

20F Specialty Coffeehouse
20 Foch Road, Singapore 209261 (Farrer Park MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 7pm (Mon), 10am – 10pm (Tue-Sun)

20F pays tribute to its address at 20 Foch Road, formerly a family-run clinic for 60 years. A modern concept in a traditional setting, an old-meets-new chic café with vintage floor tiles, metal window and door grills.

The Duck and Waffle ($22) is a spin-off of the Americanized Chicken and Waffles, added with sweet mixed berries sorbet and fresh strawberries. Weird but quite delicious. 20F Speciality Coffeehouse (Foch Road)

10 New Cafes In Singapore January 2016 – Get A Dose Of Fabulous

My cafe kakis had a problem, “We run out of places to go to.” How is that even possible? There are about 10 to 20 new cafes opening up in Singapore every month.

But “Same-old, same-old”. These are the same people who braved with me to try more than 250 cafes last year, and our diet consisted nothing more than waffles, eggs benedict, sandwiches, bingsu, and milkshakes. I TOTALLY understand what they mean. (Just for your information, we REALLY go to the cafes when we are doing our guides.)

By the way, I just came back from Seoul and their popular Miss Lee Cafe sold Dosirak, somewhat like Korean packed lunchboxes. “Do you think our local hipster cafes will ever sell chap chye peng?”

“Sure close down”, was our collective answer.

Maybe things will change. My wishlist for cafes during 2016 – less gimmicks, more introduction of local food elements, and not the same-old, same-old.

10 New Cafes In Singapore January 2016 – Get A Dose Of Fabulous

A.R.C Coffee
29/31 Sultan Gate, Singapore 198477 (Bugis MRT)
Opening Hours: 11.30am – 9.30pm (Tue-Fri), 10.30am – 9.30pm (Sat-Sun), Closed Mon

A.R.C is a 3-in-1 Coffee Place with an Academy, Roastery and Café all in one place. Situated at Sultan Gate with a 3-storey high building, the 1st floor is a café concept with a cosy white bricked wall interior with a mini roastery site at the back.

Owner Andrea wrote us a thank you email for sending “huge increase in customers over” (Your welcome), but wanted us to remind readers that “we serve food as well”. So yes, they do serve food. A.R.C Coffee (Sultan Gate)

Dose!
139 Tyrwhitt Road #01-03 Singapore 207557
Tel: +65 91458103
Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm (Mon, Wed – Sun), Closed Tues

So brave. Dose! has an extremely tricky location, diagonally opposite Chye Seng Huat, within walking distance from some other prominent cafes. Dose! is so named because every dose of coffee is measured to maintain the consistency of the beverage served. Blacklist Etude Blend from Perth is used for the coffee, while Chocolate drinks are from Australia’s Grounded Pleasures. We thought we needed to show them some support.

Fabulous Dough
PoMo 1 Selegie Road #02-25, Singapore 188306
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Thurs), 11am – 12am (Fri – Sat)

You never look at donuts the same way again. You are supposed to #PimpYourDough here – select a donut base, top it with glaze and toppings, get a syringe with filling… then push it all in. Be ready to Instagram all that. Coffee from Montana Singapore next door.

Free the Robot
118 Telok Ayer Street Singapore 068587 (Telok Ayer MRT)
Opening Hours: 8.30am – 4.30pm (Tues-Sat, closed Mon and Sun)

Sharing the same doors as Bitters and Love is Free the Robot, serving western-style brunch food and coffee in the CBD area. We were recommended the Free the Robot Burger ($12), a homemade beef burger with sunny side up egg, pickles, tomato, melted cheese and bacon, and Surf & Turf Meatballs ($7.5) – mozzarella, tomato, basil on homemade brioche. Food may need some refinement. How about some robot-themed meals?

Gallery & Co.
National Gallery #01-05, 1 St. Andrew’s Road Singapore 178957 (City Hall MRT)
Opening Hours: 10am – 7pm (Sun – Thurs), 10am – 10pm (Fri – Sat)

The café within the National Gallery. The café is being taken care of by Plain Vanilla known for their cupcakes. is from Papa Palheta, the Throwback blend which many other cafes are also using. Not that it is any bad, but too much of something, may not be a good thing. Less of that excitement, more of the same predictability. But nice, comfortable space to immerse an afternoon in.

The Coffee Academics Singapore
Level 2, Scotts Square, 6 Scotts Road, Singapore 228209 (Orchard MRT)
Opening Hours: 9am – 9pm Daily

The Coffee Academics in Singapore looks like a café meets science laboratory meets working space.
The Singapore flagship store has been designed as a 7 Sensory Station experience. Food-wise, hits and misses. Maybe we missed the Hong Kong ones too much. The Coffee Academics Singapore (Scotts Square)

Saint Pierre Market
391 Orchard Road, #02-11 Takashimaya Shopping Centre, Ngee Ann City, Singapore 238872
Opening Hours: 8am – 7pm

If you find this hard to find, Saint Pierre Market is outside Tower B, a short walk away from the taxi stand, where Marmalade used to be. The cafe offers some artisanal bread, some cakes, some salads, and coffee from Nespresso. Em, no comments. Many of the salad boxes contain more vegetables and fruits, and less meat.

Ice Lab
Orchard Shopping Centre, 321 Orchard Road #01-01/02, Singapore 238866 (Somerset MRT)
Opening Hours: 1:30pm – 1am (Mon-Thu), 10am – 1am (Fri-Sun)

My friend almost fainted when she saw the price of the bingsu. $19.30. And that is for a small sized one. The large at $4 extra. Many come for the snow-making machine that would create falling snow in the middle of a round table. How long more is the bingsu craze going to last? Ice Lab (Somerset)

WANNA CUPPA
15 New Bridge Road, Singapore 059385 (Clarke Quay MRT, near Song Fa Bak Kut Teh)
Tel: +65 68162494
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 10:00pm (Mon-Thu), 8:30am – 12:00am (Fri), 10:00am – 12:00am (Sat), 10am – 6pm (Sun)

The café is inspired by the 1920s Gatsby glamour which features fresh interpretations of the classic Art Deco designs. WANNA CUPPA serves award-winning Signature Blend coffee beans from Justin Metcalf World Barista Judge and gourmet teas from Canada for coffee and tea lovers to indulge in. Pastries such as the Carrot Cake can be worth the calories.

Sarnies @ PasarBella Suntec
Suntec City, 3 Temasek Blvd, #01-455 to 461 North Wing, Singapore 038983
Opening Hours: 10.00am to 10.00pm (Mon – Sun)
Main outlet at 136 Telok Ayer Street, Singapore 068601

As we are typing this, we know that there is going to be ANOTHER Sarnies at One Raffles Place. This outlet is within PasarBella, offering coffee in sleek, chic, black takeaway cups. Flat White ($5) is made from Colombian beans with slight cocoa, lemon and cherry aftertaste.

2016 is both a challenging year and exciting for new restaurants.

However, this is also the year when we will see many global brands setting up outlets here, the Michelin stars being awarded for the first time in Singapore, and local F&B businesses diversifying. Consumers, will continue to be spoilt for choices.

Another Korean BBQ restaurant opens in Singapore. Seorae’s signature is Korean galmaegisal, which is also known as pork skirt meat. The BBQ uses a special ‘circle grilling’ technique, accompanied with silky egg and fragrant garlic that can be cooked around the grill. Broth is boiled with filtered water over 7 hours with no added MSG, preservatives or flavour enhancers. Something that may appeal to you is the Truffle Ramen ($16.90). 10 New Cafes In Singapore Feb 2016 – Almost All Around The CBD

$

0

The CBD gets most of the new cafes this month. Apparently, workers there need a lot of coffee and health food.

Punch and Ivory Coffee at North Canal Road (yes, two cafes within walking distance), Elements & Co at Cecil Street, Absolute Acai at Pickering Street, Socks and Pans at Tanjong Pagar, Maison Kayser at Chulia Street, Joe & The Juice expanded at Chevron House, Kraftwich and Sarnies at One Raffles Place, and soon Providore just next to Raffles Place MRT Station.

All within a span of one month. (insert screaming emoticon)

10 New Cafes In Singapore Feb 2016 – Almost All Around The CBD

Punch
32 North Canal Road, Singapore 059288 (Clarke Quay MRT)
Opening Hours: 8am – 11pm (Tue-Fri), 8am – 6pm (Sat-Sun), Closed Mon

A courtyard in an open space with natural lighting, greenery, clean-contemporary look with Aussie vibes should be a big ‘punch’, we mean hit, among the foodies and executives working at the CBD.

Punch at North Canal Road is opened by the owners behind Ronin Café and The Plain, who also run an interior design studio.

A recommended dish is the Fried Chicken ($24 for 5 pieces… expensive?), crunchy and covered with a mild spicy-curry powder, juicy within, which can be dipped in a blue cheese sauce or roasted capsicum relish. A tad overcooked though. Punch (North Canal Road)

Ivory Coffee
10 North Canal Road Singapore 048823
Tel: +65 6532 0341
Opening Hours: 8am – 8pm Daily

Taking over Good Food Heals is Ivory Coffee, with chefs previously from Zafferano and Ce La Vi. Their coffee blend is a mixture of Ethiopa Sidamo, Brazil Yellow Bourbon and Sumatra.

Their noon menu features Slow Roasted Pork Belly ($15.50), Beef Burger ($12.50) and Oven Baked Chicken ($13.50), while there is a selection of Tapas such as Beef Meatballs ($5), Salted Egg Chicken Bites ($8) and Fried Mantou with Condensed Milk come evening time.

Socks and Pans
7 Tanjong Pagar Plaza #01-108 Singapore 081007 (Tanjong Pagar MRT, along Craig Road)
Tel: +65 6536 3310
Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm (Mon – Thurs), 11am – 10pm (Fri – Sat)

A cafe that offers this unusual pairing of western cuisine with local coffee & tea brewed using the traditional coffee sock. This is Socks and Pans’ 2nd outlet after its first at Raffles Place.

Tuck into Socks & Pans’ freshly-made pizza with interesting flavours or pastas topped with jiggly soft-boiled egg but not without a robust cup of local kopi or teh.

Asian influence can be seen in their menu items. Besides the popular Pepperoni Pizza, other items include Asian Pulled Pork, Bacon Onion, and Hebi Hiam & Tofu Pizzas (from $25 for a Large-sized pizza). Newly added items include Thai Basil Pork Pizza and Stromboli ($16.90).

Absolute Acai
3 Pickering Street. #01-38 Nankin Row Singapore 048660
Tel: +65 62244088
Opening Hours: 9.30am – 8.30pm (Mon – Fri), Closed Sat – Sun

Absolute Acai is another café specialised in serving Brazilian Acai bowls (Acai na Tigela), this time in Singapore’s CBD area at Pickering Street.

Its Medium Signature Bowl is at $9.50, Brazilian Bowl $7.50, Breakfast Smoothie $6.50 with an optional DIY Bowl at $6.90 with toppings from $0.50 onwards.

The signature acai is blended together with guarana, fresh apples, fresh bananas, 100% natural coconut water, with organic seeds and nuts for the toppings. They emphasized that fresh apples are used instead of processed apple juice in the blend. Absolute Acai (Pickering Street)

Kraftwich
One Raffles Place Tower 1 #B1-04/05, Singapore 048616
Opening Hours: 7.30am – 8.00pm (Mon – Fri), 9.00am – 3.30pm (Sat- Sun)

The Swissbake folks opens a sandwich and salad shop at One Raffles Place (How many salad shops do they need in that same building anyway? 6? 7?)

The budget-conscious would be slightly happy. A main with drink and side cost $13.90, while a salad from Smoked Salmon, Turkey Ham & Cheese and Smoked Duck goes at $9.90. For the early birds, grab some coffee with a croissant sandwich.

Elements & Co.
137 Cecil Street #01-02 Singapore 069537 (Tanjong Pagar MRT)
Opening Hours: 8am – 6pm (Mon-Fri)
https://www.elementsandco.com.sg

Elements & Co. themes themselves as a lifestyle space, bringing together all the different elements from the owners’ travel adventures.

Think Australian coffee, Morrocan Kebabs, Piri Piri Chicken and Risotto.

The Moroccan Souk Kebabs ($14) was our favourite. Apparently, the owners got the inspiration for this dish from their visit to Souk in Marrakech. Most of the dishes taste, well, too healthy. Elements & Co (Cecil Street)

Atlas Coffeehouse
6 Duke’s Road, Singapore 268886 (Botanic Gardens MRT)
Opening Hours: 8am – 5pm (Tue-Sun), Closed Mon
https://www.facebook.com/atlascoffeehouse

Atlas Coffeehouse is helmed by the team behind Assembly Coffee. This venture at Duke’s Road, a 5 minute walk from Botanic Gardens MRT on Downtown Line, takes on a rather earthy approach in both decor and food.

A favourite was the Candied Bacon Buttermilk Waffles ($14) came with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on top of thick airy-looking waffles divided into four quarters-circles. The waffles were well balanced – crispy on the outside, soft on the inside with a fragrant aroma.

We like it enough to come back again. Atlas Coffeehouse (Duke’s Road)

Oh My Tian
34 Whampoa West, Singapore 330034 (Boon Keng MRT)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tue-Sun), Closed Mon
https://www.facebook.com/OhMyTianSG

Opened by the folks behind Hatter Street at Kovan, carnival themed café Oh My Tian OMT is their newest happy venture.

The menu includes offerings of savoury items from the classic OMT Big Breakfast ($14) to interesting dishes such as Donut Burger ($13) and Hashbrown Pizza, whereas the sweets items of ice cream and waffles remain similar to that of Hatter Street. Oh My Tian (Whampoa West)

Sing HK Café
Blk 4 Everton Park #01-42, Singapore 080004
Opening Hours: 10.30am – 8.30pm (Mon-Fri), 9.30am – 8.30pm (Sat), Closed Sun
https://www.facebook.com/singhkcafe

Taking over defunct-Batterworks (if it doesn’t ring a bell) beside Nylon Coffee Roasters at Everton Park, Sing HK Café reminded us of a HK-styled Cha Chan Teng.

Menu recommendation includes Hong Kong style breakfast such as Classic French Toast ($5.80), Scrambled Egg ($3.80), Classic Beef Brisket Rice ($11.80) and Western dishes such as Sirloin Steak ($18.90) and Red Wine Ox Tail Stew ($18.90).

Dishes were served in traditional chinaware that brings back some nostalgia. Our favourite was the Classic Beef Brisket Rice ($11.80) with chunks of beef braised for 4 to 5 hours before simmering overnight.

Butter My Buns
2 College Avenue West Stephen Riady Centre #01-07 University Town National University, Singapore 138607 (Within Book Haven)
Opening Hours: 10.30am – 10.30pm (Mon-Sun)
https://www.facebook.com/buttermybunssg

Hurray to NUS students. The Tiramisu Hero team has opened mean Butter My Buns at the University Town (Utown). The café shares the same space as Book Haven, the University book store within Stephen Riady Centre.

The menu consisted of a savoury selection of Mix & Match Brekkie that would be assembled on a wooden chopping board.

Our favourite item was the Honey Truffle Waffles ($12) with obvious scent of truffle matched with fluffy texture.

The waffle was topped with a single scoop of milk ice cream, drizzled with honey and dusted with icing sugar for the extra sweetness.

Joe & The Juice
Quayside Isle, 31 Ocean Way Sentosa Cove, 098375

One more. Other than a expansion at its current location at Chevron House, Joe & The Juice known for offering healthy delicious juices with a touch of entertainment and fun will be opening up at Quayside Isle.

Look out here for updates.

10 New & Hot Restaurants Singapore Feb 2016 – The Empress Truly Loves Whitegrass

It’s only the 2nd month of the year, and we are seeing some luxurious style dining restaurants opening up in Singapore. Whitegrass helmed by Chef Sam Aisbett previously from Tetsuya’s and Quay, Angeleno by Chef David Almany, and Empress launched by the Privé Group.

Some restaurants are also diversifying by opening up sisters concept: Sushi Jin with JINzakaya, zhi char eatery Keng Eng Kee with KEK at Pandan Gardens, and Montana Singapore with burger concept South Bronx.

10 New & Hot Restaurants Singapore Feb 2016 – The Empress Truly Loves Some Whitegrass

Whitegrass
CHIJMES 30 Victoria Street #01-26/27 Singapore 187996
Tel: +65 6837 0402
Opening Hours: 6pm – 9:30pm last order (Tues – Sat), Closed Sun, Mon

Chef Sam Aisbett from Whitegrass has spent years working under the well-respected Chef Tetsuya Wakuda at Tetsuya’s and Peter Gilmore at Quay.

Two options are available: 5 courses at $170++, or 8 courses at $265++.

The recommended dish was the full blood Wagyu from Australia’s limestone coast, master stock braised beef tendon and tongue, toasted organic wheat, shitake, pickled Chinese artichoke, burnt celeriac.

The standout dish for me is the Slow-cooked Mangalica Pork, which incorporates some elements of Japanese with a dashi stock cooked with pork and seaweed poured from a teapot, and usage of spongy hasu-imo—the inner stalks of the Japanese lotus yam. Whitegrass (CHIJMES)

Angeleno
20 Gemmil Lane Singapore 069256
Tel: +65 6221 6986
Opening Hours: 12pm – 2:30pm, 5pm – 11pm (Mon – Wed), 12pm – 11pm (Thurs – Sat), Closed Sun

Chef David Almany from Osteria Mozza and Pastry Chef Ariana Flores who are both from Los Angeles, decided to name the restaurant “Angeleno” because this is what people from LA are called. Italian-American cooking is mainly derived from Neapolitan, and thus you would find a heavier use of tomato sauce in their cuisine.

Angeleno has several signatures and specialties. Among which includes handmade mozzarella with squash blossoms and tomato focaccia. The kitchen literally makes the mozzarella cheese after diners order it, finishing it with sea salt and fresh olive oil from Tuscany. Angeleno (Gemmil Lane)

JINzakaya
#01-08/10 Owen Link, 1 Farrer Park Station Road.
Tel: +65 6443 1173
Opening Hours: 12pm-3pm last order 2pm (Mon – Sat), 7pm – 11pm last order 10pm (Mon – Sun)

JINzakaya located at Owen Link is sister restaurant to Sushi Jin, with a more colourful look, decorated like a refurnished old Tokyo train station tavern.

Lunch sets are attractively priced – $12.80 per set with a hojicha drink. For the main item, you can choose between Donburi (rice), Ramen and Soba, Sando (sandwiches) and Sarada (salads).

The two main recommended noodles are Kimchi Ramen ($12.80) and Jin Tori Ramen ($12.80). Had the former, which contained chargrilled chicken thigh with onsen egg in a white chicken soup base spiced with kimchi paste.

The meat skewers starts from $2.50 from the basic. For a treat and less conventional choices, there are Kaki fresh oyster wrapped with bacon ($5.50), MB4 Wagyu Kushi ($9) and Foie Gras ($9.50) available. JINzakaya (Owen Link)

Truly Test Kitchen
Jun Jie Industrial Building, 153 Kampong Ampat #07-05 Singapore 368326 (Tai Seng MRT, 10 – 15 min walk)
Opening Hours: 7am – 2pm (Mon – Sat), Closed Sun
(Breakfast at 7am, Curry rice and noodles at 9am, Western at 11am)

Truly Test Kitchen set up by the team behind Truly Curry (they closed all their stalls) is a sprawling 3000 square feet canteen / coffeeshop situated on LEVEL 7 of a Jun Jie Industrial Building, housing a total of 5 food stalls which include Truly Curry Rice, Miàn, Handmade Meatball Porridge, Truly Western and drinks.

Prices are kept consistently low, with most items averaging $3.50. Homemade-Traditional Yam Cake? $2.00. Pork Ball Porridge $3. Chicken Chop Hong Kong Mee, Curry Chicken Pasta, Meatball Marinara Pasta all at $3.50. Western food such as Pork Chop Baked Rice and Chicken Waffles at $4.50! Truly Test Kitchen (Kampong Ampat)

Black Nut
2 Emerald Hill Road Singapore 229287 (Somerset MRT)
Opening Hours: 5pm – 2am (Sun – Thurs), 5pm – 3am (Fri – Sat)

“Black Nut” is the name of a “raunchy, rojak” gastropub at Emerald Hill. The name comes from buah keulak, a common ingredient of Peranakan cuisine, possibly to pay tribute to the roots of its location.

Location of Black Nut is opposite Somerset MRT, at the “heritage party stretch”. Food offering include Asian inspired bar bites in the likes of Asian Fried Chicken Wings, Balukoo Wanton, Burgers, Pizzas and sides such as Satay and Spam Fries. Black Nut (Emerald Road)

KEK Keng Eng Kee Seafood Pandan Gardens
200 Pandan Garden #01-12 Singapore 609336
Tel: +65 6694 3044
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 2:30pm, 5pm – 10pm Daily

Chef Wayne of Keng Eng Kee is giving it a modern touch with its new outlet at Pandan Gardens (ulu for many, I know). A shortened snappy name using the acronym of KEK, progressive Zi Char fare, of familiar local favourites given a twist.

KEK calls it Mod ‘C’, which represents Modern Cze Char, and you get fares such as Chilli Soft Shell Crab Spaghetti ($15), Prawn Paste Chicken Spaghetti ($10), Lala Spaghetti ($10), Mango Prawn Fritters ($4 per piece) and Prawn Toasts ($8/$16). KEK Keng Eng Kee (Pandan Gardens)

Jollibee
10 Sinaran Drive #01-07 to 12 Singapore 307506 (Novena MRT)
Changi City Point #01-37/38, 5 Changi Business Park Central 1, Singapore 486038

Philippines’s favourite fried chicken shop Jollibee has opened at Novena Square 2 and Changi City Point.

This American-style fast food chain is known to serve some of the best fried chicken around, and also specialises in burgers, spaghetti, and rice meal. Jollibee (Novena Square 2)

SUFOOD Wheelock Place
501 Orchard Road #B2-01 Singapore 238880 (Orchard MRT)
Opening Hours: 9am – 11am (Breakfast), 11am – 9:30pm (Lunch and dinner)

The opening of SUFOOD at Wheelock Place will provide vegetarians with another option at down town Orchard. Having met some popularity at its first Singapore outlet at Raffles City, this meat-free concept from Taiwan has launched its second at the basement of Wheelock next to Nam Nam (easily accessible from Ion Orchard as well).

SUFOOD’s menu is inspired by Italian cuisine, uses basic cooking techniques, and relies on using fresh ingredients. Items in vegan or lacto-ovo style are also available.

For groups, I would suggest having the 8-course set at $29.80++ per person, which include an appetizer, Rosemary Breadstick, Cider, Salad, Soup, Main, Desserts and Drink, considered relatively value-for-money. Sufood (Wheelock Place)

Empress
1 Empress Place, Asian Civilisations Museum #01-03 Singapore 179555
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 3pm, last order 2:30pm, 6pm – 11pm, last order 10:45pm Daily

Empress by the Privé Group has several ticks on the boxes – location in the iconic Asian Civilisations Museum by the Singapore River, with both indoor and alfresco dining options by the waterfront, offering Chinese cuisine with Western-style service.

Some of the signature items include the Triple Roast Platter ($28, $42, $56), Seared Angus Beef Tenderloin Cubes ($32), King Prawn Dumpling In Supreme Broth ($14 per person) and Cempedak Crème Brûlée ($13 per person).

South Bronx
1 Selegie Road #01-02 PoMo, Singapore 188306
Tel: +65 9833 1790
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Thurs), 11am – 12am (Fri – Sat)

With a colourful graffiti wall in the interior and trendy hip-hop music, the concept is by-and-large influenced by the hip burger joints in the Big Apple.

The home-grown South Bronx is also proud to feature burgers that are Asian-style, such as the best-selling Bangkok influenced Thai-Tanium ($14) and Korean G-Dragon burger ($14.00).

(Oh no. The team was experimenting with Ice Cream Burgers, and I thought the Red Velvet Burger would be a hot-seller. Unfortunately, South Bronx temporary taken it off the menu due to labour shortage. We hope you bring it back, okay?)

10 New Cafes In Singapore March 2016 – Takeaway Bingsu, Charcoal Fish and Cartoon Food

Compiling this cafe guide gives me a sense of time. WHAT? It’s March 2016 already. How did it even happen? Anyway, 10 more cafes in this month, we visited all of them – some surprises, some a second branch, some we-wonder-what’s-going-on.

WORD.
906P Upper Thomson Road Singapore 787110
Opening Hours: 11am – 12mn (Tue-Sun), Closed Mon

Located at the corner unit of the shophouses along Thong Soon Road, the double-storey Muslim-owned café (which only utilized the ground floor) was designed to look like a container café.

The main thing that caught our attention was the smart playing with WORDs (as their name implied). Dishes named as “Cut the Crab”! “Say Cheese” and don’t be “Blur like Sotong” made ordering so much fun and easier to remember.

Try the Bakkdegil ($9), also known as “Begedil” (means fried potato patty in Malay), which was potatoes cooked twice with basil aioli.

Maison Kayser Raffles Place
OCBC Centre 63 Chulia Street #01-01
Opening Hours: 7am – 9pm (Mon – Fri), 8am – 7pm (Sat – Sun)

Eric Kayser is no unfamiliar name in Paris – his croissants, breads and pastries are well known, using natural leaven in the breads.

This Maison Kayer at OCBC Centre is a larger outfit that its previous two at Grandstand and Scotts Square, serving brunch, pastry items and coffees. The rows and rows of sweet treats under glass were attractive, especially the eclairs of spongy pâte à choux hiding a center of cream.

Gemmills
110 Amoy Street #01-02 Singapore 069930
Opening Hours: 11am -12am (Mon – Sat)

This is another hole-in-the-wall, opened by the team behind Maggie Joan’s a few shops away. You enter via Gemmill Lane where Club Street Social and Angeleno.

Gemmills is somewhat like a wine bar, liquor store and café all together in one. Sandwiches and Toasted Croissants ($4.50) with ham and cheese, Vegemite and Cheese On Toast ($4.50) are available. Dark lighting, but also quite a tranquil space to spend a quiet afternoon.

Chot-Nun
Far East Plaza, 14 Scotts Road #01-16E Singapore 228213
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Is there still a bingsu-fever (Is this an oxymoron) going on? 첫눈과 같은 부드러움. 우리의 처음 기억하니?

Chot-Nun opens at Far East Plaza (where I used to get clothes long long ago), serving bingsu in a takeaway cup with a compartment for dry ice. #totallyinstagrammable

Expect interesting flavours such as durian and peanut butter.

Characters Cafe
Dhoby Xchange B1-36, Singapore 238826 (Dhoby Ghaut MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm (Sun-Thu), 11am – 10.30pm (Fri-Sat)

This Characters Cafe at Dhoby Xchange is probably Singapore’s first. The opening theme is “Kuma” which stands for “bear” and Rilakkuma is the first character brought into Singapore by BonJapan.

There will be a different character theme every month. It is cute, but let’s just say do not expect too much from the food.

If you are the type that loathes ley-chey-ness (meaning: tediousness), note that No cash transaction can be made at Characters Café, and meal coupons for a particular date and time slot have to be purchased at http://www.worldsnackday.com. Character Café (Dhoby Xchange)

The Pipe District
Gemini, 45 Science Park Road, #01-09, Singapore 117407 (Kent Ridge MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 11pm (Mon-Sun)

The Pipe District is a ‘pipe-themed’ restaurant serving modern European dishes along with Archipelago Beers.

The interior stays true to its name – repurposed furniture pieces from pipes, wood pallets, container walls. Industrial looking and thematic.

A total of 10 interesting flavours are available for the Chicken Wings, affordable at $10 for 8pcs. Salted Egg Butter (the current trend), Wasabi Mayo and Chilli Crab Style (support local!) are some of the recommended flavours. Check out their black Charcoal Fish & Chips as well. The Pipe District (Science Park Road)

The Larder Cafe
Blk 177 Toa Payoh Central #01-124, Singapore 310177 (Toa Payoh MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Tue-Sun), Closed Mon

The Larder Café has opened recently at the obscure side of Toa Payoh Central, a 5 minute walk from Toa Payoh Public Library, diagonally opposite Toa Payoh Central Community Club.

Their menu selection offers choices such as Smoked Salmon Egg Benedict ($16), Duck Confit ($18), Lamb Rack ($23), Pan Seared Sea Bass ($16). The Larder Café (Toa Payoh Central)

Aiskilin
215F Upper Thomson, Singapore 574349 (Marymount MRT)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 11pm (Tue-Thu), 12pm – 2am (Fri), 10am – 2am (Sat), 10am – 11pm (Sun), Closed Mon

Aiskilin (pronounced as ‘ai-ski-lin’ aka ice cream) has a straightforward menu: Ice Cream Rolls with 2 toppings ($5.90), Plain Waffle ($5) and Waffle with Ice Cream Roll ($9.90).

With a total of 13 flavours, interesting flavours are the fruit-based ones: Durian, Avocado and Passion Fruit. Aiskilin (Upper Thomson)

Joe & the Juice Quayside Isle @ Sentosa Cove
31 Ocean Way Sentosa Cove #01-09 Singapore 098375
Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Joe & The Juice known for combining health and entertainment, selling fruit juices and coffee with a slab of fun, has opened its 2nd outlet in Singapore at Quayside Isle @ Sentosa Cove.

Their juices have peculiar names, think Pick Me Up, Go Away Doc, Stress Down, Hell Of A Nerve, Hangover Heaven, and emmmph… Sex Me Up, which is essentially a juice of passion fruit, apple and ginger. Joe & The Juice (Quayside Isle)

Drury Lane Jurong
JTC Summit, 8 Jurong Town Hall Road Level 2 Jurong East Singapore 609434
Opening Hours: 8am – 5pm
(Soft launch)

Drury Lane at Tanjong Pagar opens at Jurong (it is still hush-hush that even their Facebook is not updated yet.)

Expect more brunch items when they are fully ready, but seems like their menu is going to be different from their original store.

10 New & Hot Restaurants Singapore March 2016 – Japanese Food Is IN

New restaurants in Singapore this month include Cheek by Jowl (Boon Tat Street), The Chop House (Katong I12), Kay Lee Roast Meat Joint (Changi Village Blk 5), Tokyo Sundubu (Suntec Eat at Seven), FLAVA (Spingvale East Coast Road), Lucca’s Trattoria (Mohammed Sultan), Sakurazka (Greenwood Avenue), The Look Out at Customs House, Gills N Shells (Hotel Boss), Terra (Suntec City) and Yunan Garden (Galaxis Fusionopolis).

Just to name a few. And there are the following 10. (March Cafes entry here.)

Personally, it is hard to catch up. Dining expenditure is also getting higher. My ‘research’ process now includes reading up on the menus and Facebook pages to get a sense of the place before decision making – especially when new restaurants are not tried and tested yet.

What’s yours?

15 Stamford Road, #01-84, Capitol Singapore, Singapore 178884 (City Hall MRT)
Opening Hours: 11am – 11pm (Mon – Thurs), 11am – 12am (Fri – Sat)

Naughty Nuri’s known for its “killer ribs and twisted martinis” which originated in Ubud Bali has opened in Singapore.

The ribs ($18.80 for half, $35.80 for full rack) were covered in a delightfully sweet-savoury sauce, – a winner, which reminded me of the dark sauce served with Ayam Baker.

The slab was no-frills really, served with a slice of lime which you could squeeze over for a dab of tanginess.

Texture wise, it was almost fork tender, and easily ribbed off. I thought some parts were too charred, and overall could be saucier. Naughty Nuri’s (Capitol Piazza)

Ramen Keisuke Lobster King
Clarke Quay – 3C River Valley Road #01-07 The Cannery, Singapore 179022 (Clarke Quay MRT)
Tel: +65 6255 2928

Opening Hours: 11.30am – 2.30pm, 6pm – 9.30pm (Wed-Mon), Closed Tue

A hidden find. Sushiro is situated within Thomson Plaza in a humble corner with 14 seats, 4 of those were bar seats to witness the Chef in action.

The Bara-Chirashi Don ($12.80) is definitely the highlight with salmon, tuna, octopus, prawn and salmon roe in a palm-sized sushi rice bowl. At an additional $10, the Premium Chirashi Don ($22.80) contained salmon belly, scallops and prawn tako instead.

Affordable and oishii! Sushiro (Upper Thomson)

Nope, you are not reading wrong. Pompompurin Café is coming to Singapore! Shortly after the news of Hello Kitty Orchid Garden café opening at Changi Airport Terminal 3, this is another news that will delight Sanrio character fans.

Pompompurin Café is anticipated to open mid to late April at Orchard Central Level 4.

To be really honest, I am not really familiar with Pompompurin. LOL. Okay okay, but it is a good-natured golden retriever dog with a trademark brown beret on top of his head.

Purin’s interest is in collecting shoes, and hiding them. He was twice voted as Most Popular Sanrio Character in the Strawberry News, a magazine published by Sanrio.

Fans and cafe-goers can expect an authentic experience on all things Pompompurin at the cafe, including a menu of kawaii-styled food and beverages, character-themed merchandise, and Japanese service.

Food and desserts include Curry Raisu, Taco Raisu, Banana Pancake, and Mango Pargait – all with that cute Pompompurin face of course. Look out here for the latest updates!

10 New Cafes In Singapore April 2016 – The Waffle Places, The Cute Bingsu And The Health Food

Privé Clarke Quay
Blk C #01-09A, 3 River Valley Rd, Singapore 179024
Tel: +65 6776 0777
Opening Hours: 5pm – 2am (Mon – Tues), 5pm – 3am (Wed – Fri, PH), 11:30am – 4am (Sat), 11:30am – 2am (Sun), 5pm – 4am (Eve of PH)

Privé is one of the newest kid in the block for Clarke Quay, which brings about a casual dining experience, live music every night from 8pm to late 9pm, and late night DJ driven parties from Wednesdays to Saturdays.

I enjoyed relaxing outside in the seated area (perfect spot to people watch) while having a sandwich or burger.

Some choices include their signature Grilled Chicken, Bacon and Cheese Sandwich, Pulled Pork Knuckle Panini or Bad Ass BBQ Burger with a wagyu beef patty, button mushrooms and housemade BBQ sauce.

Bingki Korean Desserts
Blk 7 Tanjong Pagar Plaza #01-106 Singapore 081007 (Tanjong Pagar MRT)
Tel: +65 6443 5435
Opening Hours: 24 Hours Daily

The bingsu fever doesn’t end. Bingki Korean Desserts which is near the ‘Korean BBQ zone’ at Tanjong Pagar has a huge space and pleasant enough environment (depending on which seats you get – some are short, small ones).

Opened 24/7, Bingsu for dessert after a Korean feast sounds like a good idea.

More than 10 different bingsu varieties are available, including Red Bean ($12), Injeolmi ($13), DaBang Coffee ($16), Peach ($15), Mango ($15), Melon ($18), Watermelon ($15) and Papaya ($15). The shavings soft and fluffy, the portion small for its price though. Bingki (Tanjong Pagar)

Creamier
5A Lock Road, Gillman Barracks Singapore 108927 (next to Sundaram Tagore Gallery)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tue-Thu, Sun), 12pm – 11pm (Fri-Sat), Closed Mon

Fans of Creamier and Sunday Folks can flock down to a new location. Creamier has found a second playground at Gillman Barracks. Unlike their first outlet at Toa Payoh HDB estate that experienced a continuous human traffic, Gillman Barracks was relatively quieter and “ulu” geographically.

The menu offerings are similar, with Ice Cream ($3.30 for Single scoop/ $5.60 for Double scoops), Waffle ($6 for Plain/ $8.80 with 1 scoop/ $11.60 with 2 scoops). Creamier (Gillman Barracks)

Ollella and The Pourover Bar
Residence@Somme, 3 Petain Road, #01-01, Singapore 208108 (Farrer Park MRT)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 9pm (Wed-Mon), Closed Tue

This is cute – a choux pastry café. Opened by two sisters from Indonesia, Ollella is the combination of their names – OLLyvia and MarcELLA. Ollella’s choux flavours include Vanilla ($4),Apple Cinnamon ($4), Raspberry ($5), Lemon Meringue ($4), Matcha Azuki ($4.50), Tiramisu ($5) and lastly Dark Chocolate ($4.50), listed in terms in flavours intensity.

This is a collaboration with The Pourover Bar, so fret-not if you need some coffee. A cup of hand-poured coffee will vary from $8 to $45 depending on the beans. Yes, $45. Ollella and The Pourover Bar (Petain Road)

The Providore @ Raffles Place
7 Raffles Place Singapore 048625
Tel: +65 6533 1352
Opening Hours: 8am – 11pm (Mon – Sat), 9am – 6pm (Sun, PH)

The Providore has really gone big on this one, with an all-day dining restaurant opened 7 days a week literally in the heart of Singapore’s CBD.

This flagship at Raffles can be considered a café and provisions retail store, for dine-in meals and quick takeaways. There is even an outdoor terrace.

The menu consist of Breakfast (from 8am – 12pm), Salads (11am – 10pm), Sandwiches (11am – 3pm), Mains (12pm – 10pm), Snacks (5pm – 10pm) and pastries. Found it slightly pricey, but this is not stopping the CBD folks from packing the place. The Providore (Raffles Place)

Workspace Espresso
Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 3, 12 Marina Boulevard, #01-08, Singapore 018982
Opening Hours: 7.30am – 8pm (Mon-Fri), Closed Sat, Sun

Seem to some other assemble-your-rice-bowl places, Workspace Espresso offers coffee and bakes offerings in the morning (7.30am – 11.30am) and Chap Chye Png (pardon this) style of building your own rice bowls after 11.30am.

Huge bowls and containers were displayed at the counter during lunch hours, from carbohydrates as a base to proteins, sides and dressing.

At $13.80, we were given the choice to choose 1 base, 1 hot protein, 3 sides, 2 toppings and an optional dressing. Add-ons were available at $2 for base, $3.50 for hot protein, $2 for sides and $1 for dressing.

Style by Style Vibes Café
Level 3, Media Gallery, MediaCorp Campus Singapore 787110
Opening Hours: 7am – 10pm (Mon – Fri), 9am – 10pm (Sat), 9am – 6pm (Sun)

Did I mention I LOVED Sharon Au during my much younger days? (Opps, Sharon, anyway…)

Local ex-host turned “Lead of styleXstyle” has another portfolio in her bag, this time with a café venture at the new MediaCorp campus. Is this going to be the MediaCorp ‘canteen’?

Try the Ondeh Ondeh ($6.90) cake, with soft and light pandan layers, with very sweet (too sweet for some) gula melaka layer.

The café to spot some stars.

Gecory
Blk 328 Clementi Ave 2, Singapore 120328
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10:30pm (Mon – Thurs), 12pm – 11pm (Fri – Sat), 12pm – 10:30pm (Sun)

Gecory = GElato, COffee, pastRY. Got it?

This humble-looking ice cream café has interesting flavours on a rotational basis, including SALTED egg gelato. A waffle with 2 scoops of gelato is at $11.20 – gelato was rich and milky, while the waffle was decent with a slight crisp.

Olivia & Co
Suntec City Mall (between Tower 1 & 2) 3 Temasek Boulevard #01-481, Singapore 038983
Opening Hours: 9am – 9pm

Opened by the team behind French restaurant OCF, Olivia & Co traces the adventures of “Olivia” around the world for Italian pasta, breakfast, waffles and Vietnamese Banh ‘Meanie’.

Craftman Specialty Coffee
173 Thomson Road Goldhill Shopping Centre, Singapore 307623 (Novena MRT)
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 9pm (Sun – Thurs), 8:30am – 10:30pm (Fri, Sat, Eve of PH)

Oh, The Fickle Mussel has closed (that’s fast) and replaced by Craftman Specialty Coffee which specialises in different types of coffees all round the world, with options to have coffee brewed by different types of method like V-60 and French Press.

This is their 3rd outlet after Siglap and Eastwood.

They seem to be popular among families staying around the area, coming here for their all day breakfast and brunch items such as 3 Tier Brioche, Croissant Sandwiches and English Muffin with Eggs.

Do have some patience as you may have to wait a while (or long while) for food during busy periods.

And one more…

Pompompurin Café
Orchard Central, 181 Orchard Rd, Singapore 238896 (Somerset MRT)

*Screams*. Nope, you are not reading wrong, Pompompurin Café is coming to Singapore, anticipated to be opening mid to late April at Orchard Central.

Fans and cafe-goers can expect an authentic experience on all things Pompompurin at the cafe, including a menu of kawaii-styled food and beverages, character-themed merchandise, and Japanese service.

BAKE Cheese Tart – Famous Hokkaido Cheese Tarts Opening At Singapore ION Orchard

$

[Tokyo] Many Japanese shops do just one thing, and do it really well. Such as BAKE Cheese Tart ベイク チーズタルト which has caused long lines at Hong Kong and Bangkok.

The good news is, these yummilicious Hokkaido Cheese Tarts are coming to Singapore end of this month to ION Orchard. Cue the long queues.

Interestingly, these tarts started out as chilled blueberry cheese type, with its origins as a long-established Western confectionery store in Sapporo, Hokkaido.

Till the pastry chefs who made the cheese tarts told the owner, “You seem determined to sell them chilled in the stores, but they actually taste the best when they are freshly baked.”

So instead of chilled ones, they changed to sell them freshly baked and never looked back. These tarts with a combined crumbly exterior, fluffy texture, and cheesy sweet aroma became an instant hit.

The one main element of these cheese tarts?

They are all freshly baked, so much so that the shop promises to bake their freshest right until the last order —each and every day.

The verdict of these BAKE Cheese Tarts… Crispy crust and top, creamy warm oozing inside, very fluffy.

One of the best things ever to consume for Tokyo’s winter. You can also enjoy them chilled, as though you are eating frozen ice cream.

The tarts are not that pricey too, at 216 Yen (SGD$2.70, USD$2) for one. Note: Only 12 pieces allowed per customer.

Three different types of cream cheese – mild Hakodate, full-bodied Betsukai and saltier French cheese are blended to create the ultimate cheese mouse.

Its tart pastries created from cookies are twice baked – once as cookies, the next with cheese mousse on top.

BAKE Cheese Tart will open at Singapore’s ION Orchard end April. Look out for DanielFoodDiary.com for further updates!

Burger Joint Singapore – NYC Le Parker Meridien Burger Opening In Singapore Next Week!

$

Craving for a taste of some authentic NYC burgers? Some call this the “best burger in New York City”, the joint hidden behind the dark curtain in the atrium lobby of Le Parker Meridien Hotel.

It will be opening on the 3rd of May (Tues) in Singapore.

Its choice of location is also quite mysterious, at Amoy Street but you got to find your way from the back at Gemmill Lane. If it helps, it is a short walk (really short) away from Club Street Social and Angeleno.

The menu is no fuss, with a choice of Hamburger ($13.10) or Cheeseburger ($13.80), with grilled cheeses called “Cheeseburger, Hold the Burger” ($11.00) sides of Fries ($5.50), Milkshakes ($11.80), and Brownie ($4.80).

For the ultimate indulgence, go for the Double Bacon Cheeseburger ($27.40)

Look out for the neon burger sign when you are there.
